It Wasn't About Adventure. It Was About Sharing

I’ve been thinking of my comment in last week’s post: “Thatโ€™s my kind of adventureโ€ฆnot too much, just enough to add a bit of spice to life.” In fact, that’s not strictly true. I wrote about the little adventures up on the land because it made an easy post… they were stories that most people can relate to. In fact, my kind of adventure involves doing creative projects that run into all sorts of problems with software…and sometimes hardware. I’ve just spent a day and a half working around a bug in a photo editing program, and just as I was celebrating the solution my printer started acting up. I have a bit of bulldog in me, so I don’t let go of problems until I figure out how to do what I want. There are always more things to learn, and things seldom go smoothly. No, I don’t need more adventure in my life, but few people are interested in hearing the details. ๐Ÿ™‚

The reason the visit with Kaitlin, Torben and the “puppies” (now middle-aged at six years old) sent my spirits soaring was because we were hanging out together and enjoying one another’s company. It didn’t matter to me what we did. They drove here so they could bring the puppies and let them run free up on the land. The puppies are city dogs and either run around in the back yard or walk on a leash… Sammy has issues with other dogs so it’s no longer feasible to take them to a dog park. As you can see from Torben’s pictures, they had a great time.

I put a few of my own pictures on my photostream at Flickr if anyone is interested.

What About You?
What’s your kind of adventure? What lifts your spirits, makes you feel fully alive?

I LOVE the connection with friends & family by email & this blog. Getting to know people on the other side of the world. Before computers this didn’t happen. Good for general info. too. For instance rummuser told me (before the trouble happened there)that India is safe for travel. That there are many religions in India but everyone gets along with only a few “misguided youths” that cause trouble. (I think they’re called Terrorists.) We’re going there but I’m not afraid. Rummuser is doing fine there. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Jean,

    Huskies are wonderful aren’t they?

My adventures are all internal – thoughts and feelings. Although sometimes it is a co-adventure, exploring someone else’s internal world with them (or our internal worlds together).

If I get wealthy I’d love to go to Egypt and see the pyramids and temples (they are oriented around a balance point rather than being designed to dominate the landscape, a very different way of thinking and relating to the world) – as you can see even my external travel is about the internal worlds!

For me an adventure is coming upon an unexpected twist of life. It could be a wonderful new book, a play that suddenly shines a light on something I didn’t know I knew. Or camping out on the beach in a wild place. But then there are the obsessions, which is what my blog has become for me. It has been a sort of adventure to find I can write something other people actually enjoy reading. Perhaps if I mastered more of the technical side of the Internet that would be an adventure too. Your post has motivated me to try. Thanks.

Photos show a lot of fun, but cold fun!

I get a rush from pushing through personal limits, be they physical, mental, or emotional. It’s also a blast to teach one or more people and see the light go on in their eyes revealing they “got it.”

“My Photostream” is super. I looked at almost all. I LOVE this kind of pure, white, fluffy snow!!!

SpaceAgeSage’s “pushing through personal limits” is a comment I’ll keep.

I like to explore small towns with good friends. Explore new types of music. I think of music as being an “alive” expression and never really understand why one would limit themselves to one era. I love music of all types with only small exception.

    bikehikebabe,
I agree, I love the worldwide connections through the web. Talk about lifting ones spirits… ๐Ÿ™‚

I also agree, that snow was fluffy!

    Evan,
I have a rich inner life, too. I especially like reading/listening to good biographies that let me explore other personalities and the times they lived in.

    Anne,
The part about obsessions resonated with me…I do get carried away at times. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also resonate with your description of seeing things in a new light.

    SpaceAgeSage,
Great description. For me now it’s not so much pushing through limits as being a creative problem solver and craftsman, slowly but continually expanding my body of knowledge and mastering the tools of my trade. I suppose that’s because when I hit roadblocks trying to push makes me feel frustrated…patiently exploring and trying things works best for me.

    Tim,
    I’m with you…I love to explore. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thank you all for commenting!

    Jean,
    Happy New Year to you.
For me adventure almost always involves pushing myself a little further and learning a LOT ….somehow I always get high on mental stimulation combined with physical exertion.
These dogs are lovely – they seem like they are having a truly wonderful time!

  9. rummuser says:

Jean, both my hip joints have been replaced and revised. My activities therefore are restricted to accommodate that reality. What lifts my spirits up, which rarely do need such lifting, is when I can find the time to get away from my daily grind and simply go for a long drive somewhere. Park in some deserted place, just stroll around a while and return.

    Maya,
I agree with you…I try to get at least a half-hour to an hour of day of exercise, and there’s nothing like solving a problem to get those spirits soaring. I’ve never understood why people think that drinking and partying is the only way to get high.

Yes, the dogs had a grand time. I wish they lived closer and could visit more.

    rummuser,
That works, too. And as bikehikebabe says, with the Internet we don’t even have to leave home to go exploring.

We like traveling, hiking, seeing new places… and old. I get a lot of pleasure out of taking pictures — and sharing them refreshes the memory.
