It Rained This Week!

I don’t think there’s anything more cozy than being inside looking out at a gentle Spring rain. But I realize not everyone agrees with me.

Question: What do you call a sunny day after two consecutive days of rain?
Answer: Monday.

Then there’s the tourist who goes to the Northwest for a vacation. It rains the whole time. Towards the end of the visit he asks a kid, “Does it rain here all the time?” The child answers, “I don’t know. I’m only 10 years old.”

How do you feel about rain?

Rain for India is our lifeline. Everyone eagerly awaits the monsoon after the sweltering summer. Just about everyone I know, go out when the first showers hit us, and get wet and dance with the joy that the rains bring.

I love the rains because I associate it with a number of very pleasant memories. Hot snacks, hot tea, the smell of rain on parched earth, the sudden greening of brown landscapes, umbrellas, and the list is endless.

Our monsoon starts next week, let us hope that it starts as you say, on Monday!

I love Sun the most. Warm summer Rain is a close 2nd. On cloudy days, I’m a bit cloudy. The best rain is 1/2 hour / 45 minutes; then the sun shines bright as soon as the rain stops.

Usually I like it – so long as it only goes for a day or two, or unless I have to be out in it. Looking at it from inside can be delightful.

    rummuser,
I expected you would feel that way. Years ago my husband and I saw a movie about a family in India. I can’t remember the name of the movie or of the director, but a few years ago I read that the movie had been filmed on a material that didn’t last and that it was a shame that such a classic was lost. Anyway, the part I remember the most was the children running out into that rain when the monsoon finally came. I still remember the look of joy on their faces.

Do you have a clue about what the movie could have been named?

    bikehikebabe,
I do appreciate sunny days too. It’s nice to have the contrast.
We lived in Ithaca, NY for 8 1/2 years a gazillion years ago. We scarcely saw the sun in winter, which was 7-8 months long. I still don’t take our sun for granted.

    Evan,
Yes, not having to go out in it helps a lot. 😉

Many of Indian films in all languages have such scenes as, this is a major part of our lives. The monsoon makes or breaks the agricultural cycle on which more than half our economy depends. That scene was not made for effect in a movie. You can see it in real life every monsoon when the very first showers hits one. I shall however try and find out about the film. Would it have been “Do Bigha Zameen”(“Two Acres of Land”) by any chance?

    rummuser,
I looked up Do Bigha Zameen, and it was a Bollywood movie. The one I saw was about a woman and two children. If there was a father I don’t remember him. It was a quiet film about life in the country, as I recall. Mainly I remember seeing things through the eyes of the children. I don’t remember much except for the impression it made on me….

I’ve been poking around. I’m sure it was Pather Panchali. I remember not only the daughter playing in the rain but catching a cold and dying afterward. If she hadn’t died I probably wouldn’t have remembered it all these gazillion years.

Thanks for showing some interest and getting me curious enough to check it out. The internet blows me away at times like this. Who would have guessed the answer was so readily available? We’re living in an age of miracles.

Jean, if it is indeed Pather Panchali, I can send you a DVD if you let me have your address.
