The Downside of Organic Food

I never eat organic food. At my age I need all the preservatives I can get.

Thanks to the efforts of the wife, a couple lived a healthy lifestyle and were doing fine until they were killed in a traffic accident. When they arrived in heaven they were overwhelmed by how fantastic it was. They were delighted at first, then the husband started berating the wife:

If it hadn’t been for you and your organic food, we could have been here ten years ago!

What do you think about organic food?

I believe that we have to seriously start going back to the old ways of doing everything. Till about 12 years ago, my father who had gone back to his village and farm after retirement, grew everything that they ate and it was considered bad form to buy anything other than salt. If proof is needed, he is hale and hearty at 92 as after he sold off his lands and went to a town to live in, he was luckily able to continue getting organically grown food there too. We get them here, and whenever I can get up the energy, I do go and get organically grown vegetables, fruit and grain to eat.

    rummuser,
The trouble around here is the organic food we get in the store is mostly old and wilted. Not quite what we want when thinking of nutrition. 😉

I had a garden until the animals ate it every year. (gophers, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, skunks, coyotes, fox, deer, bear)

Unless it’s a good price, we don’t eat organic food because it costs so much, isn’t as fresh as the regular food, & the regular food “Specials” are too good to resist. I don’t trust that it’s really organic too.

We have had many cases where food sold as organic proved not to be, so I am rather sceptical.

    bikehikebabe,
It’s the wilted look that bothers me.

    Grannymar,
I have the impression that most produce labeled organic in the states is somewhat controlled. I’ve also read that it makes more sense to buy organic for fruits and vegetable that have the most pesticides, like strawberries, apples, spinach, etc. If I can find good looking produce for those categories I will buy it, but our local store doesn’t give us much choice. I don’t worry about it that much.

I did like the jokes, though, and couldn’t resist. 😉

I grow my own organic veggies, and feed the girls (hens) an organic diet. What I can’t grow I get at the local farmers mkt. This limits me to what is in season, but its way better than the stuff in the supermarket, and easier on the budget. Besides I fullfill my chemical needs with that delicious ol’ cheeeseburger and fries.

    Brighid,
I’m afraid you’re right, if you want organic you have to produce it yourself. I was naive enough to think the label “organic” meant something, but you skeptics were right. This article just came out in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/02/AR2009070203365.html?wpisrc=newsletter
