Cooking Adventures

As I mentioned in the comments to last week’s post, we had a bit of a culinary adventure with our supposedly 10-12 pound, precooked Thanksgiving turkey. They didn’t warn us it would be frozen and would need to be defrosted. It would have been nice to know that when we ordered it. 🙂

I did manage to get it defrosted in time and we thought it would then be ready to eat. No such luck. It was only partially cooked… blood ran out when we got halfway to the bone. On top of that it was more than 12 pounds…it wouldn’t fit in our roasting pan… so we had to cut it up and finish cooking it in three separate batches. We were more amused than upset but decided we wouldn’t try that again. We were hoping for something a more carefree.

But our experience was nothing compared to the Army cooks in Afghanistan told to deep fry their unit’s Thanksgiving turkey. They had never fried one before so looked on the internet for a recipe. They were greeted by warnings like these:

They did manage to cook the bird without burning down their little shack of a kitchen and the soldiers loved it. So it was presumably worth the few nervous moments. Still, I’m not about to try it here. 🙂

What about you?
Have you ever prepared an unusual meal? How did it turn out?

Thanks to Mike, bikehikebabe, Evan and Cathy for commenting on last week’s post.

It’s colorful, exciting & entertaining. But no one who reads this blog would ever try that.

That looks like fun. Maybe I can try it over Christmas … I have the Weber Grill that was used in one of the videos.

My most exciting meal was when I did some squid and I let it thaw too long. Yuck. (I haven’t been permitted to cook for a long time.)

    bikehikbeabe,
Apparently fried turkey is a holiday delicacy in the South, that’s why the Captain requested it. He figured it would be good for his soldiers’ morale, since many of them came from the Southeast.

Have you ever had fried turkey, Mike?

    Looney,
It clearly can be done safely if you make sure the turkey is completely defrosted and dry…and if you make sure the oil doesn’t overflow into the flames. If you do try it please have someone take a picture for us. 🙂

I think Jean, you should at least a write a note to the suppliers of the grossly wrong advertisement for a pre-cooked turkey!

I can’t think of anything off hand that ever went badly wrong for me as such but my ex-DH is very fussy eater and certain things he would NEVER eat except when faced with a very elderly aunt of mine who made him a special lunch.

He ate every scrap of it but when I suggested some months later we should have it for our lunch he said I NEVER touch anything like that!

it was a pizza with a double load of cheese topping, tomato and other embellishments…

about the only think edible from that dish in his opinion would have been the onions and the base!

I have eaten partially fried turkey drumsticks – I wasn’t cooking them the impossible fussy food eater above said he would do it because it would take too long in the oven – they were ghastly!

    Cathy,
I will try to give them feedback on that frozen, partially cooked turkey.

My guess is those turkey legs weren’t cooked very well. Did he try to deep fry them or did he try to do it in a frying pan? I don’t like fried food, but if it’s done well I wouldn’t call it ghastly, just not to my liking. It would be fun to have a taste just to see what it was like.

That’s funny about the pizza. 😀

    Cathy,
I just contacted the store (online) and described what happened. I asked them why we weren’t told the bird was frozen and wasn’t completely cooked. You’re right, it’s important to give them feedback for the sake of other customers. I mainly thought the whole thing was funny and would make a good story for a post.
