In Style

I was tickled last week by an article in the Wall Street Journal: Stylish Guys Steal Short Sleeves From Nerds.

When I showed it to my husband, he said. “So, after all these years I’m back in style! Maybe it will happen again in another 30 years.” Ever since we were married he’s worn white short-sleeved shirts and navy slacks. If people want him to be stylish they have to make that outfit the fashion. 😀

What about you? How stylish are you? Do you care one way or another?

Thanks to bikehikebabe, Ursula, rummuser, blackwatertown and Cathy for commenting on last week’s post.

At work: polo shirts and khaki pants with black shoes; otherwise solid color tee shirts and jeans with athletic shoes. Not really concerned with stylish.

Love those photos, Jean. Heart rending. Or maybe rendering.

Style, as opposed to fashion, such a personal take on what you put on your back. Main thing: It’s you. No one else. Not a copy to be found anywhere.

I had riches. Now I’ve got rags. Stylish ones. Andy looks trademark fine in his short sleeves.

And you wear hats. Berets too? The odd headscarf – Grace Kelly style?

No, I am not bothered with being currently stylish. I am mostly in a lungi and a vest in any case! I have always been more bothered about being comfortable and practical. I too favour half sleeve shirts to the full sleeved ones except when I have to wear a suit or a blazer. Our climate makes most Indians to favour the half sleeved shirts.

I like stylish. Those clothes hang in my closet. What I put on everyday is what I wore yesterday, my OLD favorites, & they go in the laundry when they are good & dirty. ‘Young’ people wash their clothes to death. My daughter launders new clothes before worn in case they have something added to the fabric.

Ursula, we (smart) people never go outside without a hat, due to the powerful sun here on the mountain. I’ve never seen a beret worn here. (you English!) Nor a headscarf. Don’t see muslims around here.

Polos and chinos – short sleeved in summer, long sleeved in winter. And blue. Almost my whole wardrobe is blue because then I can put anything with anything and the colour mostly matches. I don’t want to have to spend time thinking about what to wear.

    Mike,
You’re like us. There are more fun things to spend our time on.

    Ursula and bikehikebabe,
BHB is right, I wear mostly sun hats or hoods on my warm winter jackets. Years ago I did wear a warm winter scarf when I was helping tutor remedial reading for middle-school kids (12-14 years old). I walked the mile and half back and forth and it was cold. Some of the kids teased me about it (we had a good relationship), and one “defended” me. “Don’t let them bother you, Jean. My grandmother wears a scarf like that.” We all laughed.

    BHB,
Before Andy got his Ph.D. and we got married he wore gray work pants rather than navy ones. He got a teaching/research job at Cornell and we decided he should have something a bit dressier. So we bought him a jacket and a tie and switched the color of his pants. When it was time to teach he would just slip on the jacket, and when we got invited out to dinner we would stop at his office first so he could get the jacket and put on the tie. It worked well. He wore the same outfit when Kaitlin and Torben got married. Here’s the picture. Wise purchase, don’t you think?

    Rummuser,
    Yes, comfortable and practical.

    Evan,
And clothes you don’t have to spend time thinking about what to wear.

    BHB,
The shirt and pants have been replaced many times, but it’s the same jacket and tie. Not that they were worn that much. 🙂

  9. Occasionally stylish, but only by accident. One of my kids recently referred to my “famous party hair” – it was the first I’d heard of it, or that it was famous (meaning notorious). It was not meant in a complimentary way.
I’ve recently got into short sleeves – used to absolutely hate them – prefer it if the shirt has some body to it – not too thin.

    blackwatertown,
I don’t like long sleeves except for sun protection when I go outside. The sun is fierce at 7200 ft. I also wear wrap around sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Not everyone thinks that’s the height of elegance, but it works. 🙂

  11. Looney says:

Jean, the shirts look to be clean and ironed. Does he do that?

  12. Jean says:

    Looney,
    Yes. 🙂

my mother had great style…think barbara stanwyck, kate hepburn; i on the other hand want only to be clean and comfortable! i have short hair like judi dench and i love it. it’s truly wash and go and it suits me. it’s been called everything from gamin, pixie, to the italian cut (dating myself here…) but i am finding out that’s ok too! i love my age and me. it’s actually the only way to be. “be yourself, love yourself, love others.” my motto (and i think he looks wonderful in his fresh white shirt and navy pants!)

  14. Jean says:

    tammy,
That’s my haircut too. It’s so easy, and I love Judi Dench.
