Ups and Downs

They started to build our “chimney” today. Actually it’s a structure not just for the wood stove pipe but also for the venting pipes for our propane heater and refrigerator, air-to-air heat exchanger, etc.

We also passed our plumbing and heating inspection, and our windows arrived today. They hope to install them next week. On the downside we had rains heavy enough to mess up the roads. Andy spent one morning cleaning out culverts after one rain, only to have it pour while he was eating lunch. The rain completely filled up the culverts again. He’s arranged to have a backhoe, backhoe operator and two helpers work on the road this weekend. The flooding is mainly an aftermath of the fire–there is still not enough vegetation to stop flash flooding and erosion. Anyway, we’re not surprised. That’s one reason our cabin is so small. Roadwork is expensive.

What about you? Any ups and/or downs in your life this week?

Thanks to Evan, Cathy, Dixie and Rummuser for commenting on last week’s post.

A few ups and downs in my part of the world

Progress on your cabin is looking good. 😉

We are now at the highest level of drought, but it rained last night. 😉 The forecast for the next 10 days is clear with highs ranging from 100 to 110°F. We are way behind on rain and our average annual rainfall is about 50 inches. The moisture from last night’s rain will be gone soon. 🙁

Long week at work…. 8 hours of interaction with the students in the simulator every day — including 3 hours of management observation by the site V.P. — is exhausting… and rewarding.

Back to “normal” four hours a day contact time with the students next week.

How about forgetting the road until there is vegetation to hold down the soil. Get a 2nd-hand Jeep or park & hike to the “cabin”. Hiking is good. 🙂

sounds like good advice bhb 🙂

Mostly ups here but one somewhat downer which should be solved on Monday when I get a decent office rolling chair with “moveable up/down seating” – of the 2 chairs here I could use as a temporary solution for art marking/making – both had problems.

Ended up with sore back, neck and then arm…which I know was caused by height, other!

A big “up” today. On some Saturdays I go watch my great nephew play soccer and on the weekends when he is with his Dad, me and my niece always take in a few garage sales (yard sales) and she is Queen of Them! Today, we found a whole lot of Letraset Tria-markers and Inks!! Some are used, alot seem very unused…great buy, great find 🙂

    Evan,
I hope there were more ups than downs.

    Mike,
I’m glad that this next week won’t be quite so strenuous. I sympathize about the heat and drought. As I recall you don’t think it’s because of global warming?

    bikehikebabe,
Unfortunately we won’t have a cabin or finished shed/workroom for Andy unless we keep the roads up. Your strategy would definitely make sense for younger folks. Unfortunately we’re aging faster than the forest is regenerating so we have to do the best we can with what we have left. 🙂

    Cathy,
It sounds as if on the whole things are going well. I’m glad your downer will probably be easily resolved.

  6. Mike says:

I’m no expert on droughts, but, despite what the media tells us, this drought is not unprecedented, even in the historical record.

  7. Rummuser says:

That cabin sure looks good and once the windows are put in, will look picture perfect.

Flash floods in our part of the world is quite common, but this year the monsoon has been playing truant and we have not had any in our part of the country. The North East had and many lives were lost and property damaged.

My life was by and large placid. Neither ups nor downs.

  8. Rummuser says:

Jean/Mike, between global warming and climate change, what cannot be denied is some very unusual climatic conditions have been experienced all over the world the last few years and we continue to experience them.

  9. dcrelief says:

Overstretched the right arm a bit, so I’m backing off of garden work. Just as well because we’re experiencing high humidity. Other than that I’m doing great!
    The cabin is coming along!

Oops! I thought I had answered these last comments. Sorry to be so late.

    Mike,
I think most scientists agree the world is warming up and that there will be massive changes coming. That doesn’t necessarily mean those changes are primarily caused by human activity, but we will have to adapt one way or another.

    Rummuser,
The cabin might not be so picture perfect after the rest of the flashing is installed and we paint it. Don’t underestimate our ability to mess it up. 😀

    Dixie,
Sorry about your arm. We do have to be more careful as the years go by. 🙁
