Andy was happy and excited when he came home Tuesday evening. He said, “Guess what Beate and Tim gave me! A tree!” They planted it for him that evening, and he’s hoping it will survive the transition from its old hothouse environment to the harsher conditions up on the land. As you can see he’s already tied the top to a pipe with a red rag — the stem isn’t strong enough to support the top cluster of branches without help. He’ll trim as little as possible to make it viable even when the wind blows.
The tag on the tree says it’s deer-resistant but not deer-proof. We’re not sure what that means, but we’re hoping for the best.

They love Andy, and why not? They’re great neighbors (summer only), and they keep an eye on him when they’re there to make sure he’s all right. They’re about 28 years younger than he is. It’s touching.

I buy a lot from Amazon, but even so I get excited when someone gives me a gift card there. The gift I’ve gotten most excited about in my life was a Snoopy watch I bought for Kaitlin years ago. I bought it in early November and could hardly wait until Christmas to see her open it.

that’s a different thing. i was given three trees for the wee blink bonnie. (then i bought three). i love trees as you know.
to me … a perfect gift! they all were growing big and tall and thriving! now the family that bought the wee blink bonnie are enjoying them.

It sounds like you and Andy agree about the ideal gift! We will keep you posted about how the tree does. I’ll also comment on some of the other trees he has planted. They’re a lot smaller.

A few years ago, I got a lot of gift vouchers and I actually had some difficulty with a few of them – too many choices…finally I used a few as part-payment towards something…
That is a very thoughtful gift because the recipient is someone who will appreciate it.
It has been a mighty long time since I got a gift from anyone. I have received a lot of help during difficult times from family and friends which are, in my opinion, bigger gifts than things. I think that I accepted them, and continue to do so with humility and gratitude rather than get excited about them. I don’t know how I will react if someone gifted me with an Alfa Romeo.
