Today Orlando and Andy uncovered and unplugged the culvert

and repaired the washed out section of the road.

They had hoped to install a second culvert — using a section of an abandoned one that a neighbor had donated. But it was so clogged with dirt and debris that it was too heavy for the trackhoe.

So instead they used the extra time to improve the drainage on the rest of the road up to our land.

Presumably that’s it for roadwork until next year. If the washed out section gives us more trouble, we’ll install a bigger culvert next spring.

Have you finished any projects for the year?

(As usual there are more pictures on Flickr.)

Amazing what a machine like that can do in hours!

Used a lot of subtlety and indirect persuasion via friends to get my son married!

Never mind all my mindless little projects I have on my LIST. I’m all wrapped up reading about your battle with MOTHER NATURE. 🙂

    wow!
OVER for this year??? meaning your ‘rainy’ season is over? I guess heavy snow won’t affect it? it’s turning into a bit of a scary road for me. and since it’s not mud . . .
i’m guessing basically a base of shale and rock with lots … make that tons? of sand on top? it’s so dry and movable considering all the rain you’ve just had. amazing!
    GOOD LUCK!!!
    and bhb…

There’s a lot of rock, but clearly a lot of easily eroded dirt too. I think of snow plowing as different from rebuilding roads. We will have to see if Andy can keep the roads open this winter. He used to do part of it with the snowplow mounted on front of our 3/4 ton truck, but before the fire we also paid our share of someone else doing a lot of the plowing. That fellow has moved on. Since then the snowfall has been light.

In fact, it may not be over for the year. I just looked at photos from last year and we had some washouts in the middle of October!
