Good-bye Summer

The tomato plant froze about a week ago:

But Andy had saved three green ones to ripen on the window sill. Summer is definitely over.

Down here yesterday a fast-moving storm blew through, and we had our first snow (mixed with rain) of the season. In NZ Cathy is starting her garden. What’s it like where you are?

Yes, my summer is scheduled arrive at some point but as is atypical of Spring – it’s a stormy and windy today, a few days ago it was sunny and beautiful. I mowed part of the lawn (part because I ran out of energy to finish) – it looks like I was making a topiary type lawn – I did a few narrow strips!

I have got all my rotted compost/fertilisers on a very small plot covered with black plastic to warm up and get settled in. Somehow the wind lifted one corner of the plastic today and then later the compost bin lid blew off – so was the wind.

Haven’t decided on what I’ll plant this year, but fancy one of those tiny toms tomatoes…

We are right now in the festival season with the ongoing navarathri which will dove tail into diwali which will indicate the onset of winter. We already have chilly nights with temperatures going down to 19 degrees C.

It’s definitely fall here — by the cooler temperatures. No more highs near 90°F (32.2°C), though temperatures are creeping up a bit since the last “cold” front. We took a short hike near Little Rock yesterday after starting the day out in jeans because it was so cool — it would have been more enjoyable in shorts. Last Sunday, we took a longer hike in rougher terrain and cooler weather — would have been chilly in shorts. Our foliage is still the deep green of late summer. With adequate moisture this year, I expect our fall colors will be vibrant, but that’s still a few weeks off.

It’s hard to figure out what to wear, isn’t it? We had some vibrant colors downtown last week, but they’ve already faded. And Andy’s fruit trees are starting to hang it up for the year. If you’re like me, you won’t miss the hot days.

Here we are getting a taste of changed climate.

    Summer in mid-Spring. 37C (c.98F) a few days ago, 36C (c.95F) forecast for tomorrow.

Our new location near a beach means that we go swimming after hot days like these – after the sun alert is over (around 4:30).
