Vulnerabilities

Having my site hacked made me aware of vulnerabilities in WordPress plugins, themes and files. Bottom line — always upgrade to the latest versions as soon as possible.

That experience may be one reason I found the article Russia’s New Black Widows so fascinating. The title says black widows, which is the Russian name for female terrorists, but in fact it talks about a new breed of suicide bomber, male as well as female. Unlike the usual image of bombers, they’re not motivated by revenge for their loss of dignity, homes and loved ones. Instead they’re lonely and need love and attention, so psychologically savvy terrorist groups use them as pawns. The groups coddle them, giving them the nurturing they crave. They’re not pressured, but eventually when the pawns are ready the groups give them a chance to sacrifice themselves for Allah and the group. At this point they are accompanied by two or three handlers, who let them go on their mission only if they are calm and under control. Then at the right moment the handlers detonate the bombs remotely.

Wow! We hear about con artists all the time. These groups take the art to an entirely new level.

    Suicide Hotline

I was depressed last night so I called Lifeline.

Got a call center in Pakistan.
I told them I was suicidal.

They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.

Well, in some ways this is every armed forces recruitment campaign.
