Alarm Clocks

Andy and I get a lot of catalogs. Some of them get tossed out immediately, but we almost always look at the Hammacher Schlemmer one. It usually has some intriguing gadgets in it. One of the latest is a runaway alarm clock. As soon as it goes off it starts rolling around so you have to catch it before you can shut it off. Do you know of anyone who could use a device like this? For only $59.95 plus shipping and handling?

What kind of alarm clock do you use? One of the great joys of being retired is I don’t usually need one, but when I do I use two little battery-operated ones — a travel alarm and a small “atomic” one (updated to the national standard by radio signals). They’re both quiet but they’re enough to wake me up without being hard on the nerves. Do you use alarm clocks regularly? Do you ever hate it when they go off?

We rarely need an alarm clock, but when we do, we, too, have a small battery powered “travel” alarm clock. It’s normal “duty station” is on the vanity in the bathroom. Funny thing is, when we do set the alarm, we’re generally up before it goes off. That holds true for me even when I’m working. I generally get used to the schedule and wake up before the alarm, often by just a few minutes. The only time I hate when the alarm goes off is when I’ve had a poor night sleep.

Can’t think of a worse experience. Being wakened by an alarm clock when I’ve had a poor night’s sleep. 🙁 But there’s always tomorrow night. 🙂

It sounds as if you both are lucky and have never been plagued by chronic insomnia. That’s great.

That sounds like an interesting gadget though a bit steep for my purse.

Raised by a martinet my body has been disciplined. I automatically wake up early every morning. Having been traveling man most of my life, I have an inbuilt alarm system and I usually wake up before the alarm goes off even when I set one for insurance. I use my mobile phone now to set an alarm, but prior to that used a battery operated small traveling clock.

I’ve never used an alarm clock. I go to bed almost the same time every night so I wake up the same time too.

My problem when I was working wasn’t that I didn’t go to bed the same time every night, it’s that I would wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to go back to sleep for hours — sometimes not until a half or quarter of an hour before the alarm went off. My body’s clock was out of sync with my work hours. I’s sure glad those days are over!

I had to post the runaway clock to my f/book page – so cute…

I have always had some type of alarm “clock” – since I got single I first used a alarm machine that connected to my favourite radio station although it did also have conventional buzzer. That broke

Onto next small clock that I still have and use if away – but it had such a large tick (still does) that it kept me awake…

Now I use my cellphone and has the ability to be on a repeating feature for whichever day I want without completely remembering.

But right now I do not need it because I’m not dictated by a certain time…

However, if it is a fine day the Asian man at the back does his exercise which involves jogging up and down the driveway that goes past my bedroom window – he doesn’t have running shoes on, rather ones that make a loud sound. If it is raining he doesn’t do it. So he runs up/down around 4 times and I’m awake! This around 7.45 – 8am time frame.

Although I’m on a busy street (near Mall/businesses) the cars do not wake me because they are part of the life and I’m one house back from the street (the Asian family is behind me so they are three back from the road); however my bedroom windows are in direct line of the street…

Saturday School sports (cricket season now) has not begun for Milo – and I would be in the city by 8am so alarm is needed…

Yes, I thought the clock was cute too. Kaitlin pointed out it wouldn’t work if you have dogs — and a spouse who gets up later than you do. The dogs would no doubt love the excitement of chasing the clock around. The people, not so much.

I’m always awake at 6 a.m., like “clockwork.” For power naps I set my cell phone.

I can’t imagine this runaway alarm clock. It would probably freak me out. Yes!
