Contingency Plan

It was sunny but only in the 20’s up on the land yesterday, so Andy took a walk and worked on the plumbing inside. We talked about what I should do if he doesn’t come home some winter night. We don’t want to declare an emergency if he just has car trouble and is safe and warm, but if it’s freezing cold we don’t want to wait until the next day either.

Greg, the fellow who installed our solar-electric array, mentioned in the contract that he makes calls for night and weekend emergencies. So Andy is going to ask him if he’d be willing to be our backup. If he’s willing and available, it would be an ideal solution for us. We don’t want to impose on other people and would much rather pay someone to help. Of course, we’re hoping the situation never arises!

As I said, the weather is still fine here, but the Midwest is another matter. Click on the picture for the video.

Here’s a picture of Kaitlin and Torben’s back yard. It looks as if the pups will be housebound for a while.

But at least they should be safe. Take care, Kaitlin and Torben!

Thanks! It is now only supposed to be -9 for a high. Heat works; dogs are glad about that :).

I still smile at the thought of Montana checking the grate with her paw to make sure the air is warm enough. She is a smart pup!

poor little sammy probably has arthritis too.
even for a snow lover like me . . . i can see that those poor northeasterners are in TOO deep! and it just gets worse.
i’m glad you have a back up now.
at our age it’s the only sensible thing.
actually. what am i saying! at ANYONE’S age … when working in a remote area …
    it’s only smart.

    awww….
    be still my heart! adorable.
    i recommend TWO beds! LOL.
granddad bought one exactly like that for watson when we were out there . . .
keeping jacob off it was the test. finally jacob announced he needed one of those too.
    floors are drafty!

      I agree about the two beds. Although Montana lets Sammy use his when she’s on Kaitlin and Torben’s bed;

Kaitlin has just pointed out that they do have plenty of dog beds in the house: “Of course with this present from Kate they have something like 4-5 beds. I think 3 in the living room and 2 upstairs. 3 official dog beds, and then blanket piles as well…” It spoils a good story, but unfortunately truth often does that.

Good plan. I hope the contingency isn’t needed.

    I’m glad we helped!

I’m sure we did with our wide range of comments to the blog about “being alone in the wilderness/Andy”

Conversations of this nature with partners/household members should take place regularly. Maybe you schedule one at the moment – every 6 months. A time to sit and ponder where you both stand on “plans” – give each, time to really think about their partners’ needs and so on.

You might say “not necessary” as we see one another regularly but this is more about each ones fears/hope and is a conversation dedicated to the “contingency plan” which should also include you in the township by yourself when Andy is away/cottage.

    • Jean says:

I agree, the conversation with you all helped a lot. 🙂 Actually Andy and I have conversations about plans from time to time. They just happen naturally.
