Puttering Around

I just read a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin says,

I couldn’t stand being a girl…. When guys grow up, they get to play with cars, sports equipment, cameras, stereos, electric tools…you name it.

But girls don’t get any toys when they grow up. Women just buy clothes and shoes. How boring. How sad.

I can hardly wait until I get old enough to just β€œputter around.”

I clearly don’t agree with Calvin’s view of women, but I am glad Andy and I are old enough to just putter around and play with our toys. What about you?

I certainly am not playing with cars and the other things that Calvin talks about and I don’t have a Hobbs for company either. Like you and Andy, I mostly mutter around! No, that is not a typo. I don’t even putter around.

Funny — Whenever I see or hear about this toon, I’m reminded of one of my sister-in-law’s ex-husband. —-> his name was Calvin Hobbs.

Well, there’s nothing to stop girls (or rather, women) playing around with cars, sports equipment, cameras, stereos and electric tools. The joke relies on tired old gender stereotypes. And like Ramana, I’m not interested in any of those things either. I think gorgeous clothes are much more fun than stereos or tools.

    I am not truly retired!

I putter and mutter as well – often I do a lot of swearing but at other times, I’m as nice as pie

I’m not good with mechanical things whether they are stationary or move like a vehicle…as soon as something starts to make a funny noise, I’m really scared it’s gonna be broke right away! I much prefer not to hear a noise and it just “stop/die” – then I’m happy it has to be fixed by someone else…

Half of my new toys I have no idea what half the button/knobs are for…sometimes I find out inadvertently or I see someone else doing xyz and try it at home! When someone comes to fix a computer/toy – I watch, I learnt so much from “experts” hitting things on my screens/keyboard πŸ™‚ not so much now but back in the beginning…

considering buying small tablet for Uni – and found today, I could actually manage a small touch screen (in the store, no one bothering me with “how can I help?”)

I love my tablets! The nice thing is there are plenty of people to ask if need be. But as you say, they tend to be well human-engineered so a lot of things we can figure out for ourselves.
