Hi-yo, Silver!

At the end of each episode, mission completed, one of the characters would always ask the sheriff or other authority, “Who was that masked man?” When it was explained, “Oh, he’s the Lone Ranger!” the Ranger and Tonto would be seen galloping off with the cry, “Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!” catching the attention of one of the townspeople crossing the street.

We used to listen to the Lone Ranger on radio, then later watched it on TV. He was one of my childhood heroes. I hadn’t thought of him in years, but I still remember the theme song and the “Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!” at the end. So I recently ordered the first episodes via Netflix and am starting to watch them. I don’t like the stories themselves so much, but the beginning and endings still send a thrill down my spine.

Does anything cause that reaction in you?

Actually what gives me a thrill in movies and TV series is strong female characters who lick the men into shape and won’t stand any patronising bullshit. I love C J Cregg in The West Wing and Zoe Barnes and Claire Underwood in House of Cards. My rampant feminist streak….

Yes, I love movies/TV series with strong female leads too. The one that comes to mind is Patty Hewes (played by Glenn Close) in the TV series Damages. She was a brilliant, ruthless lawyer, not very nice at all, but was she ever powerful!

We heard that on the radio in the 40’s. — 7:30 Monday, Wednesday, Friday from WXYZ in Detroit that produced it. (Tom remembers all that.) We listen to Old Time Radio at night when sleep isn’t happening, but it was taken off Old Time Radio 5 yrs ago.

Tom remembers a lot more than I do! I do remember listening, though. The Netflix DVD showed how the fellow became the Lone Ranger, how he got his horse, Silver, and how he decided to use silver bullets — mostly as a calling card because he vowed not to kill any outlaws but to bring them to justice. According to the story he was a good enough shot to shoot guns out of the bad guys hands. The episode was a bit preachy, but no one could say he wasn’t a good example for the kiddies.

I remember Sky King, and I think I listened to that one on radio before it went on TV. I don’t remember Superman (maybe vaguely), but yes, Hopalong Cassidy. I am in the process of watching a DVD of him right now. Apparently there were movies of him before TV but we never saw one.

The interesting thing is my sister and I loved Roy Rogers in the movies, but I don’t remember watching him on TV. Did you ever see The Cisco Kid? He’s in my DVD queue right now. All I remember is at the end he would say, “Oh, Pancho.” And Pancho would say, “Oh, Cisco!” Then they would both “Ha, ha, ha!” and laugh their way off the screen.
