Wear and Tear

A box of new crayons! Now they’re all pointy, lined up in order, bright and perfect. Soon they’ll be a bunch of ground down, rounded, indistinguishable stumps, missing their wrappers and smudged with other colors. Sometimes life seems unbearably tragic.
— Calvin and Hobbes

I laughed out loud when I first saw that cartoon. Now, after playing with oil pastels — no crayons, they’re no longer as colorful as they used to be — I’ve decided Calvin is wrong.

Sure, unless we die very young we do show signs of wear and tear as we get older.

But don’t forget:

It would be much sadder to sit in the drawer unused, only to get thrown in the trash years later. Do you agree?

I really wish that I could show some wear. While I do show a lot of tear, where I would like to see some wear, there seems to be only growth!

    i totally agree.
and not with just crayons or paints.
the ‘things’ people store in drawers and boxes and closets… and move when they move… and still store in the dark…
oh the freedom and joy of passing things on! to be used and enjoyed by others!
… just another side of the same coin.
how i love calvin and hobbes! have all the books and re read them thru winter months!

I love Freecycle and Clothes Helping Kids. They make it so easy to give away good things that I will never use again.

I completely agree!!!! My poor heavily-used camera would agree too 🙂

When you’re putting colors next to each other, it’s better to have them blend than match.

    Definitely agree

    It’s a lot more fun. 🙂

I am not a lover of drawers nor closets and recently I made a huge decision to have a set of shelves in my bedroom for clothing – I love looking at it – not colour blended now but certainly am actually putting on different things daily…
