We Can Relate to That

Poor old Jonathan Bing
Went out in his carriage to visit the King,
But everyone pointed and said, “Look at that!
Jonathan Bing has forgotten his hat!”
(He’d forgotten his hat!)

Poor old Jonathan Bing
Went home and put on a new hat for the King,
But by the palace the soldier said, “Hi!
You can’t see the King; you’ve forgotten your tie!”
(He’d forgotten his tie!)

Poor old Jonathan Bing,
He put on a beautiful tie for the King,
But when he arrived, and Archbishop said, “Ho!
You can’t come to court in pajamas, you know!”

Poor old Jonathan Bing
Went home and addressed a short note to the King:
“If you please will excuse me, I won’t come to tea;
For home’s the best place for all people like me!”
—Betrice Curtis Brown

That poem was in a book of poetry for children that Kaitlin and I used to read. I thought it was funny at the time, and it’s even funnier now because Andy and I have recently had our own Jonathan Bing moments. Have you ever left the house without something important and had to return for it?

Er no. Not yet anyway. I certainly wouldn’t leave home in my pajamas, even if pajamas are fashionable daywear in certain circles. I don’t even leave home without an umbrella, as the skies can open at any time at all round here.

i once went to school in my slippers.
    does that count?
i’m thinking jonathan bing didn’t REALLY want to have to with the king at all. LOLOL. you know. deep down.
under his no hat no tie and pajamas.
    love this.

    want to have to
    or want to have tea
    either way!
    he didn’t.
    LOL!

I keep forgetting to take my mobile phone all the time! I rarely go back for it though. I enjoy being without it and on return can call those whose calls I might have missed.

    The poem is very nice.

We don’t use our mobile phone for receiving calls. We got one years ago so Andy could phone home if something happened and he got stuck up in the mountains. Then the phone company switched from analog to digital and the phone doesn’t work on the land. He takes it every day just in case there’s an emergency when he’s someplace where there is reception. Not exactly the ideal situation!

I wear my oldest clothes & the pretty newer ones stay in the closet.

  6. Cathy in NZ says:

Most Tuesday nights I go out but on one particular one, I may not get a ride and I never really know (it’s potluck) so last night my friend called about 5.55 and said “okay do you still want to come?” I said “yes, but I will need change one item of clothing” and she said “what?” “my PJ’s” to which she said “come in them…”

I looked down at them and thought, not this particular pair…

Every so often I leave things behind particularly an umbrella. People say just load it every time but I don’t like to have wasted weight…

  7. Dixie says:

Oh yes – my grocery list. It never fails I am one ingredient short of lasagna, whatever, etc. I promised myself years ago I would save my brain cells for old age… and I forgot that too.

    • Jean says:

I seldom make a grocery list, and when I do I usually forget to take it with me. But the very fact I took the time to write things down helps.

Mark Twain: “Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most.”
