I Think I May Be a Geek

I think I may be a geek, because I laughed out loud at this email from American Science and Surplus:

You know the trouble with department stores?

Shop with us, there’s no reason to shop anywhere else. Sure, they have Appliances, Menswear and Junior Misses. What they don’t have is Motors, Blowers and Pumps. They feature Linens and Patio Furniture, but they have no Militaria or Lab Supplies. Good luck finding the Magnet department. Ought to be ashamed, actually, missing all the good parts. Know why Gimbels went out of business? No windshield wiper motors, no inflatable punching clowns. We have a department for every unmet need. Stuff that no self-respecting department store would ever stock.

AS&S…funner than eBay, cheaper than Gimbels used to be.

When I showed it to Andy he laughed too, saying, “That’s a great company. It has a lot of of interesting things.” We seldom buy from them, but we used to enjoy reading their catalogs.

What kind of ads/catalogs do you enjoy?

my gram LOVED hardware stores!!! so i’m an old hand at walking through them.
maybe she was ahead of her time! LOL.
i still would rather walk through lowe’s or home depot than any department store.
    i find it all fascinating.
and i love the smell of those stores. all the wood no doubt.
as a kid we used to pour over the giant sears catalog that would appear about this time. expecially the part for christmas! never getting what we marked of course! LOL
now i enjoy a little catalog i get called ‘bargain books.’ amazing selections and most prices just 5.95! … as if i need more books. but it’s fun to read their catalog.

I still remember the Sears’ and Montgomery Ward’s catalogs too. In fact for years after we moved here we bought most of our non-food items from them. They each had stores here in town where you could return things, but we ordered from the catalog. And yes, the Christmas wish books were fantastic!

  2. I’ve not heard of AS&S, so I cruised around their website a bit. They do have quite the collection of things you don’t realize that you may need! My favorite ‘odds ‘n ends’ things is Vermont Country Store, it reminds me a bit of Cracker Barrel which I love.

We get Vermont Country Store catalogs too. I agree, they’re fun to look through. I just now looked at the Cracker Barrel online store for the first time. Thanks. We learn so much through blogging!

It’s call junk mail here nowadays and it’s either a raft or a double raft of items that can range from latest coupons at Burger King/KFC through to what you can get at Farmers/Briscoes/K-Mart with local supermarket specials, the local liquor store and then maybe a local newspaper – either newsprint or a little booklet…sometimes other places.

Thursdays’ local rag has a large insert Property News – all for sale of course…you take that out and the paper shrinks dramatically!

I don’t get many catalogues now either, they all seem to have gone on-line!

    • Jean says:

Actually we still get a lot of catalogs as well as newspaper inserts. The catalogs don’t make it easy to get off their list. Usually you have to mail them a request to delete your name.

There used to be some great department stores in Belfast, but one by one they went out of business. Now you have to go to any number of shops to get all the obscure bits and pieces you need, quite often entailing a car journey. Shopping doesn’t get easier, it gets more complicated.

We do a lot of our shopping online because we live out in the sticks. But the corporation that owns our grocery store just put in a new grocery/department store. I love it!
