Yesterday Andy spent some time cleaning up the sides of the roads in preparation for plowing this winter.

Are you doing anything to prepare for winter?

Yesterday, I winterized our little motorhome — draining the fresh water tank and water heater and filling the water lines with RV anti-freeze. The day before, I made sure that openings to the house’s crawl space were properly sealed and insulated.

It seems as though winter is already here. We had our first freeze over a week ago. This morning the temperature is 28° and may go lower. Tomorrow night, the low is projected to be 23° and there’s a chance of snow and/or freezing rain on the weekend.

It’s been nice lately, but suddenly it was 23° when we got up this morning. It did get slightly above freezing today, with a brisk wind, but now it’s down to less than 15° at 10:15 p.m. We have some adjusting to do.

We don’t really have to do anything to get ready for the winter. Ours are very mild.

    I’ll move to Florida. Our furnace is mis-behaving & I’m freezing. 😀

We are too late if we’re getting ready for winter now! It is -10°F and has been snowing for about 48 hours!

I’m a tiny bit confused about your “land” versus where you live. Would you mind you explaining?

    • Jean says:

Yes, you’re farther north than we are, and the cold just hit us today. This evening we were amusing ourselves in our drafty living room watching the temperature drop.

We live in a small town at 7200 feet. Our 80 acres are at ~8900 feet. They’re about 10 miles as the crow flies but about an hour’s drive, half of it over rough dirt roads. We originally (about 37 years ago) thought we would live up there when we weren’t snowed out and rent a small place down here in the winter. The building took longer than we thought, and we (especially me and my eyes) got quite a bit older. I just drive around town or to Santa Fe in an emergency. Andy obviously goes up almost every day, and I occasionally go up with him. It’s working out well. Parallel play.

It’s like winter here today, yesterday we even had 10mins of hail… so mixed you can’t be sure it will be still dry when you go out in the sun!

I am not worried about winter preparation – my goal is to try and deal with the long grass that will not cease growing out the back, have managed to mow a little – before the long grass and the electric mower felt it was too much. Hope to start dealing with the high grass with hand clippers in the w/end…
