#GivingTuesday

This logo isn’t quite up-to-date. It’s ignoring Small Business Saturday, but it is a way for non-profits to get in on the action.

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.

The idea seems to be catching on, I’ve just received a number of appeals asking for donations in the name of Giving Tuesday, but it’s not for me. For me the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a quiet, reflective time. Remember, I’m the gal who’s already bought Andy’s gifts through 2016.

But have no fear, I get plenty of other chances to contribute during the rest of the year. They do make it easy — except to say no.

I gave not only gifts but also of myself yesterday to three needy families. I did not even know that it was Giving Tuesday! Had I known it, I still would not have made a hoopla about it. Here is another instance of commercialising a good idea. At the back of it all is very likely to be card companies selling Give Tuesday accompanying cards or whatever plus some do good NGOs using the net to raise funds,

    i’m with you and rummy.
giving when it’s not “ordained”… but just from the heart … all through the year …
it’s the most heart~rewarding to me anyway.
still… i guess it’s a good thing to designate a ‘day’ to remind people maybe.
it does seem that for all our crass commercialism we’re still a nation
of generous people for the most part.

I imagine people do donate more around the holidays. They’re already primed for giving, so charities might as well take advantage of it. It can be a win-win for a lot of people.
