Three Wise Monkeys

Do you remember the three wise monkeys: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Speak No Evil? Tom Cheney has updated them, as we can see from the box of the 2015 Cartoons from the New Yorker Day-by-Day Calendar.

Does anyone agree with the original wise monkeys any more?

I do. I however do not agree with the fourth monkey of some Eastern traditions. “Sometimes there is a fourth monkey depicted with the three others; the last one, Shizaru, symbolizes the principle of “do no evil”. He may be shown crossing his arms or covering his genitals.

In another variation, a fourth monkey is depicted with a sulking posture and the caption “have no fun”.

You agree with the original “See no evil… etc.”? It reminds me of the German’s under Hitler being condemned for adopting that philosophy. And Burke’s “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

I was always a bit sceptical about the monkeys. I think people need to be warned.

I don’t know if I agree but I do love those cartoons!

I laughed, and then ruminated about the balance between the two groups of monkeys. I enjoy laughing at the clever portrayal of imbalance, but this is what I really want to say: . Come on, ever-turning wheel, do your stuff!
