Thrifty Kate strikes again: Pregnant Duchess wears designer dress for the THIRD time as she attends gala dinner with Prince William in New York

What’s the fuss about? Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, wore the same dress for three fancy occasions, all within the space of 14 months.

I’m sure glad I don’t have to worry about things like that. I wear pretty much the same style every day — navy polyester pants and either a T-shirt or white polo shirt. And even most of the T-shirts are same style — gray with the following Sidney Harris design.

I started wearing them years ago, and I’m glad the company still makes them. They still warm my heart. (I have ordered a Consider this diem carped. and this Yay, tammy! Yay, Captain! one, so my rut occasionally does let other designs in.)

Andy’s wardrobe, of course, has even less variety. Remember the fellow who saw us in Santa Fe a few years ago? He recognized Andy but Andy had forgotten him. The fellow didn’t mind. He said, “Well, I recognized your clothes. I thought to myself ‘I recognize those clothes.’ Then I looked at your face and thought, ‘I recognize that face too.’ ” There’s some advantage to being consistent.

What about you? How much variety do you like in your clothes?

Hardly any. I am mostly in my native white kurta and pajama outfit. When I have to oblige some of my young admirers, I may go in for a pair of trousers, usually sober colour with either a checked or plain half sleeve safari shirt. In the evenings, I may wear a cravat in the neck. I am too conservative in my dress habits. I do have two pairs of jeans, but rarely wear them. I do wear polo shirts with track suit bottoms when I go to the park for a walk.

Yay, polo shirts! I’m with you about jeans, too. I wore them when I was young, but I don’t see the appeal now. They’re too heavy. The cravat sounds fancy.

My clothes are very predictable. Jeans and a shirt plus a jumper if it’s getting cold. That’s about it. Fashion always passes me by, so you won’t see me in any fancy Calvin Klein pants or Giorgio Armani suits any time soon.

We save a lot of time and money if we just buy what we like and stick to it. I remember being at a party once when hemlines were supposed to be up that year. One woman apologized because hers was still down — she had just had a baby and hadn’t had time to modify her clothes. Everyone looked down at mine — it was a great dress and was the same length it had always been and would always be.

Bet you youngsters didn’t know that the hems went UP-DOWN, mini skirt– to the floor– mid-calf… Fine with me. I loved to sew so I went with the styles.

    • Jean says:

Good for you, liking to sew. Did you really wear miniskirts? What did you think of them?

    • bikehikebabe says:

Yes mini skirts were cute & so were my legs then. I got caught on the balcony in winter in a mini skirt, because the door shut behind me & was locked. I jumped around for an hr. to keep warm before my 1st piano student came to let me in. The front door was unlocked.

      Great story, BHB!

    LOL! a funny andy story.
i’m for comfort ALL the way.
earlier in my days i thoroughly enjoyed dressing for bob.
but for the last 14 years since i retired and haven’t had to dress for work . . .
i love living in comfortable ‘invisible’ clothes. meaning… always the same.
    simple tops in navy… grey… white… cream… taupe…
jeans in winter and grey fleece pants … white pants in summer.
    i call it . . . stylishly dull!
every now and then the shock of a red scarf or tartan in the winter. and little knit caps for warmth. life is good.
kate is quite a change from diana who refused to wear the same thing twice.
maybe on a very rare occasion when she ‘really liked’ it.
kate is a pleasant change i think.

    • Jean says:

I wish Kate would go all the way and just wear her favorite clothes whenever she wanted to. However, that’s not our problem. 🙂

Yay, comfort and the freedom to wear what we like!

  4. bikehikebabe says:

I have 5 closets full of wonderful clothes –that I don’t wear. It was fun then to dress up & go to parties. Now nobody dresses up here, including me. I wear what I want which is pretty sorry looking.

    • bikehikebabe says:

P.S. Then, I used to wear something different most everyday. Now I have a “uniform” that I wear until it’s good & dirty & put it on as soon as it’s dry from the laundry. I hang clothes outside or across the family room in winter. BTW did you know that your dryer uses more electricity than any other appliance? (Don’t Google that. Not sure if it’s true.)

    • Jean says:

      I love my uniforms!

  5. KB says:

I think the silliness of the media about Kate and her dresses is crazy.

I have my “mountain clothes”, which vary very little day-to-day. My “town clothes” have a bit more variety! I am definitely not into style 🙂

I love new clothes, but I hate shopping and am too thrifty to do it anyway. That means I seek out clothing with classic styles when I am forced to shop because something has worn out.

You asked bikehikebabe if she had worn minis. I don’t know about bikehikebabe, but I certainly wore minis back in the late 60’s. I loved them: loved the way they lengthened my legs, the coolness of them when living in a semi-tropical but mostly still un-airconditioned city, and the freedom of striding in them. I liked thinking of my oh-so-hidebound self as just a little bit of a rebel, experimenting with who I was going to be. Of course, I was actually following someone else’s idea of fashion. However, I also carried a scarf to drape artistically when no arrangement of my limbs could achieve modesty when sitting! I laugh when I remember how much thought I was willing to put into how to bend to pick up a dropped item, get out of a car and sit. Despite the minis, I was and am a rather modest person.

I still think the experimentation was worth it. It gave me the bravery to rebel a bit when I feel the rebellion is deserved, and it did, then, too, when I started veering to the left of all my companions. I reserve my rebellion now for writing to my oh-so-conservative senators (“Here comes another letter from that aging hippie,” I imagine them saying.) and otherwise investing my energy where I think change needs to occur.

  7. Evan says:

    Almost no variety at all.

Chinos and polo shirts. Almost all blue – the different shades of blue usually go ok together.

  8. Cathy in NZ says:

I go through different clothing and often put away something and bring it out again a few seasons down the track.

Well this winter, I bought back a green and purple abstract type flowered semi-stretchy thing…maybe I should take a snapshot of it…it comes down long not quite to the knees and has very long sleeves – a low neckline. For me it covers a multitude of sins but for some reason every time I have it on, either a regular friend or a complete stranger compliments me on it!

One time I was at a gov’t dept with my case manager and the women on the next desk came over and said “wow, I love that top” – I was stunned, then my manager looked at me and said the very same!!

even one of the young men (20-something) in the disability space made nice comments every time I had it on at Uni!!

Everyone wants to know where I bought it…”I don’t know, some years ago” “somewhere”

My special Santa friend, wants to get me some new gear but he has suggested we wait until the January Sales… there are some things that need upgrade! I really want to get a mid-season sort of garment, maybe a two piece that looks good wherever I want to be…

    • Jean says:

That’s neat to have an outfit that always gets compliments. And it should be fun shopping for something new during the January sales. It’s something to look forward to, and much better than someone buying you something you don’t like.
