Winter Day

It was a bright, sunny day down here yesterday, but below freezing, overcast, and windy up on the land. Andy had to clear four or five trees off the road going up, and another three new ones coming home. He did have help with two of them — one going up, one coming down.

What a difference a few miles and a couple of thousand feet makes!

What is it like where you are?

We are 1840 feet (560 meters) above MSL. Today has been mostly sunny, 28° C Maximum and expected Minimum later in the day 12° C. At 33% Relative Humidity, it is dry and bracing. I enjoyed being out in the sun for a while in the morning when had gone for a pedicure.

It’s an overcast day, with the temperature at 67 F (19.4 C) . We’re at about 600 feet elevation, at the bottom of a wide valley surrounded by rolling hillsides. The Colorado River (the Texas version) arcs around us, about half a mile away in about a 250-degree arc. The hillsides used to be heavily wooded, but massive wildfires in 2011 destroyed almost 1,700 homes and burned a little more than 34,000 acres. We’ve had several freezes already this season, but this is typical for Central Texas: moderate temperatures unless we have a storm sweep through. We live on what used to be prairie land, so the wind can be brutal. However, I’m within walking distance–even with my cane and my increasing disabilities–of a wildlife refuge along the Colorado River, so I’m not complaining.

It’s sad to see the trees go. Andy’s aware of how much more wind we have up there now that they’re not there to break it. We get quite a bit of wind even down here at 7200 feet when the jet stream shifts overhead. I used to joke that I needed ankle weights to keep from being blown away.

I’m glad you’re so close to the wildlife refuge.

it’s very mild here. almost like spring.
but that will all change in two days. we’re expecting rain then. no talk of snow . . .
but how nice that would be! just in time for christmas maybe. one can hope!

We’ve got those thousands of feet of elevation change all around us. If I go down to town (3000′ down), it is rarely very cold or snowy. But, my return my house is like a return to winter!

well, I just mentioned weather in the last post (I’m behind with blog reading…)

according to weather page it’s been 23C which is probably about right because it’s not really cold but it’s is very, very wet – thunder as well, I hid under the blankets…

then it cleared a bit, I heard from a pal in Thames it had arrived there, whew. But now it’s back again – my poor overgrown lawn doesn’t need another growth spurt!

Thanks! I love weather reports. I’m guessing you get a lot more rain than we do here.

we often get draughts (?spelling) but this year at this point looks like a “no for this coming year” – it’s looking a bit better this morning, although it has been raining the concrete drive is very wet looking…hopefully I can get out in a few hours time and get some groceries, bank some monies – dismal as at just after 7am!
