Assumptions

3-11-15-Montana-Moments

In last night’s post Montana was going on about a weather forecast of a Fenced Dog Alert, until Torben said,

Sorry to interrupt your rant Montana – I know I am supposed to just be acting as your scribe – but I think I need to stop you now and inform you that the weather people said: “Dense Fog”. Not “Fenced Dog”.

Montana replied,

Oh. Never mind.

As usual, it sometimes pays to check our assumptions. We can’t believe everything we think.

Cute photo. However, poor Montana wasn’t making an assumption at all. He misheard something. Happens to me all the time (not because I am deaf but because my mind does like to play hide and seek with me). Often with hilarious results. And in the days when I still used to say that I am “prawn” (prone) to something no one mistook me for a shrimp.

“Assumptions” does appear to have a bit of a bad press with you. Yet all assumptions are is giving us a reasonably informed starting point which help us to make, say, decisions, act, react – in absence of (and this is important) all the facts. And what are ‘facts’? Not everything can be ‘verified’. Human life does not take place in a lab.

I’d say we make assumptions based on accumulation of experiences. So, for instance: Friend A hasn’t arrived yet. Friend A is always late, forgetful, basically a chaotic person – so I don’t worry at all because my assumption is that he is still under the shower and not on the road yet. However – different story with friend B. If and when friend B – who is ALWAYS on time and if running late will let you know in advance – is so much as five minutes late you become twitchy. Though I will try damn hard to not jump to hasty conclusion (assumption’s eager cousin) that he has been run over.

As I often say, Jean: It’s a MIND field out there. Maybe every so often you should just meander and relax a little. Now, what I just said is a fine example of an assumption. An assumption I make based on how I perceive you. It might be a ‘false’ assumption (as, no doubt, you will claim), on the other hand it’s still a ‘reasonable’ assumption.

    On which happy note,
    U

And another great example of we can’t believe everything we think. 🙂 See Are You Spending Enough Time “Doing Nothing”?

Yes, I had a classmate called Fazal Haque.

LOL – I have a lot of thoughts on the matter, but I don’t want anyone to make any assumptions on them! So I’ll pass on this round, if you don’t mind 🙂
