Golf

One of my favorite cartoons shows God sitting in an easy chair watching TV, while an angel waits with a list of crises to be dealt with. God says something like,

I don’t have time for tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes right now. I have to help this fellow sink his putt.

Yes, priorities are priorities.

I’m enjoying watching the Masters Tournament this weekend. I usually watch it every year, but this time it’s especially interesting because of the spectacular playing by 21-year-old Jordan Spieth and because Tiger is playing again, and playing respectably. There’s still an outside chance he could win.

Presumably Tiger still wants to break Jack Nicklaus’ lifetime record of winning 18 major championships (Tiger has only 14 so far), but the Wall Street Journal article How Tiger Killed Tiger points out this may be hard to do because he has made golf so popular, and has emphasized fitness so much, that he has generated a lot of competition from the younger players.

Anyway, there’s no doubt that Tiger’s very presence still makes a tournament more interesting. He’s done wonders for golf, whether or not he ever beats Nicklaus’record.

and I think a couple of other youngsters here, are making Golf a #1 sport to be seen more often in the news here…

I seem to recall that Tiger Woods was a young man with passion years ago which took Golf as you say into a new dimension for the sporting world

I was a 14 handicap golfer when my hips gave way and haven’t played since 1980. One of my very few regrets in life. But yes, the presence of Tiger Woods makes all the difference to a big tournament.

Arnie and Gary Player and Jack hit the first balls to open the Masters Tournament. They’re still revered, and Tiger will be too, I’m sure. Jordan Spieth was hoping Tiger would be playing his best this tournament, because Jordan wanted to have a contest with him. But Tiger didn’t do as well today — someone said he was more old Tiger than “the old Tiger.” But Tiger hasn’t nearly given up yet. He’s still a force to be reckoned with.
