Julia Child

Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.
—Julia Child

I’ve recently watched Julia Child: America’s Favorite Chef, plus some of the episodes of The French Chef, and it brought back fond memories. I watched The French Chef when we were in Ithaca from 1966 to 1974. We had lived in France from September, 1964, to October, 1965, so it was fun to watch a program about French cooking, and it was fun to watch Julia enjoy herself in the kitchen. She wasn’t glamorous and sometimes made mistakes, but she was passionate about food and cooking and shared her enthusiasm with her audience.

I can’t recall trying any of her recipes, but I did enjoy her joie de vivre and the way she ended her shows with “Bon appétit!” My “appétit” is more for other things than for food, but enthusiasm is enthusiasm. Yay, Julia!

With the exception of watching her television show from time to time, I knew very little biographically speaking about Julia Child until I watched the 2009 movie, “Julie and Julia”, which I thought was quite informative with regard to her life. Particularly with how she got involved with French cooking and the writing of her famous book. You have probably already seen the film but if not, I think you would enjoy it. Meryl Streep does an excellent job in the role of Julia Child I thought. 🙂

I don’t watch TV but finding something to be passionate about and being totally interested in it, makes sense to me.

i would occasionally watch her show.
and i did enjoy the movie alan mentioned. she was one neat lady!
once i saw her drop a chicken. she just said… “oops! SLIPPERY!” and she picked it up and wiped it off with a damp cloth. can you imagine that on one of these cooking shows today? LOLOLOL! that’s what people loved about her i think! honesty.
    and tremendous talent.

I was a fan of her shows too, and thought Meryl Streep did a great job of bringing back those memories. It’s beginning to look as if my passion now is turning to gardening, not away from reading books and talking about them, but toward gardening. The more I sit in the dirt outside doing this and that, the more I want to do. Don’t know why I’m surprised, getting older takes a lot of us this way. (Though not many of us are dragging giant trees off roads and installing energy systems, that’s not what’s usually meant by gardening.)

As I mentioned above, I was impressed at how Meryl brought Julia back to life.

Don’t forget, Andy raises daffodils and redwood and fruit trees. Daffodils are great — no one wants to eat them. Everything else needs a lot of protection. Do you have that problem?

    • Jean says:

Oh, yes. Andy pointed out I forgot to mention Kaitlin’s pussy willow. It’s doing great, thanks to the netting. And there’s the protected limber pine tree and the gradually disappearing 12 little unprotected evergreens.

I know of Julia Child and may have watched some episodes but I only know her in relationship to a passing thought a chef/cook…

I wax and wane on cooking, nowadays because if I bake – I end up eating too much “cake”! I have got most food prep down to a fine and fast art and then do something else with that spare time – besides eating…

    • Jean says:

I don’t spend much time cooking and eating either. We’re like you — simple healthy food with plenty of time for our projects. 🙂
