That approach works for me. A lot of little things needed attention lately, and this afternoon we received a bill from our local medical center for $19.64. The bill said our insurance had been billed and the balance was due by May 1st. That didn’t make sense, and when I checked our insurance company didn’t know about it yet. Hmm. So I phoned the company doing the billing, and apparently no one had paid anything yet. The $19.64 was the difference between what the proider wanted to charge and what they had contracted to charge the insurance company. They wanted us to pay the difference.

I don’t think so. The billing company took our insurance information and will resubmit the claim.

I don’t expect the matter will be resolved this easily, but I am willing to be pleasantly surprised. The main thing is I didn’t waste unnecessary time and energy on the matter. Experience helps!

The above post needed to be rewritten. Cheerfulmonk crashed when I tried to update WordPress and my theme, but I did manage to restore everything to the state it was in Wednesday evening. Again, a good test of keeping one’s cool. There may be hope for me yet!

    My mind plays tricks on me on occasion and when I read “Cheerful Monk Crashed”, it went into overdrive till I figured out that the blog had.

    You are right. I too do not leave anything to chance and when some thing unusual lands up will sort it out immediately. That way one does not have to put in any effort at recalling old matters at a future date. I also have an efficient online filing system as well as a physical one and can locate any document at need.

      Same here, Ramana. I saw “cheerfulmonk crashed” and went into “OH MY GOD – what’s happened” overdrive. I dare say that momentary rush of adrenaline to my racing heart will have shortened my life expectancy by about three seconds. Shame on Jean. She owes me big time.

      You and I are kindred spirits, Rummuser. Document, document, document when things go awry. And get them settled — or at least started — as soon as possible.

    there are all kinds of lifelong learning – not just the matters of the muddled billing system – as long as your own memory isn’t faulty on the matter. It’s when you can’t remember the exact string to deal with things…

    then there are all the new things to learn and remember OR in the case of the keyboard on the computer – “enough to get by” – I still hardly know what all the keys do, no instructions with this one!

      The main thing is not to get thrown when challenges present themselves. Focusing on being curious and learning is more efficient than worrying or getting frustrated.

    my land line died. i bought a $15 replacement mobile phone with a charger.
    as i sit here there are no less than 10 updates to wordpress i’m supposed to do.
    the last ‘update’ they did resulted in my cursor jumping all over the place whenever i delete a letter or a word. i have to find my place in the script i’m writing…
    it takes me twice as long just to get a few words down.
    so very irritating.
    i prefer not to learn word press’s updates that aren’t even usually necessary! even the captain can’t fix it. it didn’t do it before that ‘update.’
    i’m also glad you personally didn’t crash!
    and i do agree… life long learning is important!

      I’m not sure WordPress was the problem here. It was really strange — I’ll write more about it tonight. Would it help if you wrote and edited your post elsewhere and copy and pasted it into your blog? It sounds as if that would save a lot of grief.

      Write your post in your email and then copy and paste it to your blog.
      It’s much easier to save and go back to if need be.

    I have to say that the medical billing system is the craziest thing I’ve run across. I get about 10 mailings for each “event” before I get a real bill. I never know when it’s finalized. I do believe in life long learning, but I’ll pass on trying to figure out the crazy medical billing system!

      In this case they were trying to make us pay for the part they had contracted not to charge. It’s not that much money, but we are contesting it as a matter of principle. They are no doubt trying to do the same thing to a lot of other people.

      It sounds as if your insurance is even less comprehensible than ours is!

    I flatter myself that I was part of the movement that got ISO certification going from the old Materials and Logistics Management movement in India. The mantra for ISO certification is document what you do and do what you document.

    than I ever did when I was younger!

    One thing I have learned that really helps me is when having an issue with a person at a place of business. if you are there in person especially, is to not talk too much.
    Don’t get mad or go on and on. Just state the facts and then stand there.
    People tend to start talking and I listen and just shake my head.
    They seem to keep trying to find a solution when they realize I’m not going to get mad and stomp away. In fact I have even said “Nope, I’ve got all day. I’m not leaving until you figure this out.”
    Of course I am fuming and raging inside but that dead calm usually does them in.

      Hopefully you can eventually do it without getting upset inside! “Cheerfully firm” is the expression I like. I learned that from Dr. Benjamin Spock when Kaitlin was little.
