Road Rage

We mostly think of our little mountain town as a safe place to live. So did a fellow driving a Honda up the curvy hill road the other night. A fellow in a truck tailgated him the whole way, and when they got to the place where the road leveled and straightened out, the fellow in the truck revved his motor. The Honda driver rightly assumed the truck was going to try to pass even though it wasn’t a passing zone, so he moved over to the right to give the truck driver more room. Wrong move. The truck driver actually was trying to use the short turning lane on the right to do the passing. The truck scraped the Honda and tore off the side mirror, but no major damage.

The Honda driver stopped his car, and the other fellow stopped his truck then came running back to the Honda screaming. The Honda driver rolled down his window, and the truck driver punched him, went back to the truck, put it in reverse and rammed the Honda — hard enough to flatten one of the tires, crumple the hood and bend the radiator and frame. The Honda was totaled.

The Honda driver phoned the police and gave them a general description of the truck and the last three digits of the license plate. It isn’t enough to determine the truck driver, so they’re asking people in town to be on the lookout and phone them if they see a truck that fits the description.

Who would have guessed? Have you ever had or been a victim of road rage?

That sounds quite alarming. The truck driver must have been quite deranged. Glad to say I’ve never been a victim of road rage. I get people hooting me because I’ve done something stupid (or they think I have) but thankfully that’s about it.

While cases like these are increasingly being written about in our newspapers, I personally have not been at the receiving end. Many years ago, 26 to be precise, I was at the giving end and got quite involved in a police case.

I am the Walter Mitty of Road Rage.
I play out different scenarios in my head as I drive.
The guy who is zooming up my car’s ass when I’m going over the speed limit myself and then quickly changes lanes to finally pass me but I instead also change lanes at the same time and their car rolls and flips into the river.
OK. not really, but I do feel irritated as someone follows so close that I know there would be an accident if I had to stop suddenly.
But no. I haven’t actually ever reacted in reality.

Now, my sister, OMG. I HATE to ride with her.
The other day we were coming up to the Interstate and some lame person pulls out in front of her. They couldn’t wait for her to pass but rather they pulled out in front of her and then took their time accelerating. It was a nightmare.
She laid on her horn and rode their butt for at least a block until they moved into another lane and got out of her way.
I was holding onto the strap on the passenger car for dear life and I was slunk way down into my seat.
After we passed the car I told her that is how people get killed.
I told her that people have shot at other cars or got out at red lights with a baseball bat to confront the person.
She just laughed and said she wasn’t scared.
Yep, hate riding with her. She’s crazy.

      Stay safe and snug!

I have nothing against other people being ostriches. I just don’t want to miss all of the history going on. Hopefully we’ll escape the worst of it.

I’ve never been the victim of road rage nor have I been angry enough on the road to act out.

No, I was a meditator but this provocation was just too much. I have been a meditator for 37 years now.
