New Ideas

Yesterday we pointed out some ideas work better than others. What do you think of this airplane seat design that Zodiac is trying to patent? It does pack more people into a plane and gives them more elbow and leg room.

On the other hand this proposed bicycle-seat design by Airbus may be going too far.

Airbus says the seats may never be produced, but they are protecting themselves for the future just in case the design might be useful. Still, it is disconcerting that they are even thinking of it.

I think that the Zodiac style seating should be quite nice.

    you’re asking a claustrophobic this?
LOLOL. i suddenly heard that in my head in a yiddish accent… as in from a much loved uncle moe.
    but seriously.
i see how it could make them more money. and if only for business commuters. but good grief. no. it doesn’t look comfortable in the least.
and after a hard day in meetings or work … to get on a plane and sit on that for any length of time to get home? no thank you.

From what I hear, planes are already uncomfortable unless you pay for business or first class. We haven’t been on a plane for 14 years, and we only took that one then to visit a sick relative.

The Zodiac design is most ingenious. And as they say, it seems to give more leg and elbow space and more room to manoeuvre generally. Still a bit tricky though for those who need to get past other passengers to use the toilet.

But bicycle seats? They have to be joking.

    • Jean says:

I don’t think they expect to use the bicycle design. The author of one article said it did have one plus — the height of the seats were adjustable. That would be a boon for tall people like him. It would take a lot of modifications to make them safe in turbulence.

The fact that the seats in the Zodiac design fold up would make it easier than now, I think, to let people get by.

crikey, looks uncomfortable – or it is BYO cushion! maybe that should be “cushions”

or even further down the track you will be fitted with a moulded unit when you arrive and clipped into place – therefore we can double the capacity

It will be interesting to see what airplanes will be like in the future. Not that Andy and I plan to go on one if we have any choice!

    I’m claustrophobic also.
I want as much room as I can possible have.
    And an aisle seat please.

Looks like a great idea for short flights.
