Singing in the Lifeboats

Mostly I’ve been ignoring the political campaigning, but I did read a summary — with some video clips — of Thursday’s Republican debate. And I laughed out loud when I saw this segment:

Some people would say we shouldn’t laugh, the situation is way too serious for levity. I disagree. I’m with Voltaire:

Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.

  1. I love politics, but even I have stopped listening, at least for now. All they’re doing is trading below the belt shots…can there be a winner? If this continues it *might not* be the Republican Party.

  2. I love that quote, and heard it once years ago. It speaks volumes. I also like Voltaire’s quote that we should “tend our garden”. Minding our own business and being productive is the key to living life well. Unfortunately, in a dangerous campaign like the one going on in the US currently, we can’t afford the luxury!

In all fairness the debate was good and I enjoyed the humour that runs below the surface.

    I LOVE that quote!
    perfect.
    I watched the whole clip.
At first I thought it very funny.
They both are good at debate.
But when it was done, I felt like they might be in on a bigger plan together.
Maybe I’m just getting paranoid but could they be rambling on about this so that they don’t have to talk about the important issues.
Being the age I am, and hoping someday to retire,
I want SOMEONE to commit to detailing out their exact plan for Social Security.

I’m afraid you’re expecting way too much of politicians. They say what they think people want them to say and hope that it sells.

I think that Voltaire must have foreseen this election with that quote! I alternate between laughing and yelling at the TV during those debates.

I’m afraid I haven’t been watching the debates, partly because we don’t have cable. I do read summaries afterwards, which is more than enough for me. What a mess!
