Skip this post if you’re not a dog lover, or if you are and aren’t ready for a good cry. John Pointer had to put Benny, his beloved dog, to sleep and wrote this cathartic Facebook piece from Benny’s perspective. I’ll never forget the phrase, “Don’t worry, buddy. I gotcha covered.” It goes straight to my heart.

    My dear Jean, gotcha.

I never skip anything. Not even the painful. And little is more painful than losing someone for good.

“Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man, without his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog.”
    – George Gordon, Lord Byron, “Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog”

    I tried monk.
    it’s so beautiful.
but I just couldn’t do it.
my zeke had cancer and that last walk into the clinic with his tail still trying to wag…
    too raw still.
even after all these years. it’s hurt that will never go away.

  4. Cindi says:

    you warned me
and yet i read it and now I can’t see
    that’s how hard i’m crying.
I’ve lost a lot of pets
and it’s never easy but this story
reminds me of my Maddie, my Golden who had Cancer.
Best dog ever and I still grieve for her, more than 13 years later.

  5. Jean says:

I know how hard that is– that’s the sad thing about four-legged friends. I’m so sorry for your loss.
