But lawyers don’t just look for people who have suffered misfortune. Some, for example, lotterylawyer.com, advertise their help if you win a jackpot.

In fairness, this Forbes article suggests winners should hire a lawyer as well as an accountant and a financial advisor before they claim their money. But Andy and I don’t have to worry, it’s been a long time since we’ve bought a ticket.

Do you ever buy lottery tickets?

Do I ever buy a lottery ticket, Jean? Yes, but rarely. Only on the occasional Saturday when misguided optimism and its big brother HOPE get the better of me.

In fact, my reasoning is so curbed, and please do laugh at me if so inclined, that when I do play I don’t check my numbers for days and days and days after the draw. That way I prolong the sweet agony of hope against hope whilst indulging myself in day dreaming.

I bought one once just to see how one did it. It was a family joke that I was a bust because I bought the wrong one. So then Andy would buy one if the pot was over a million dollars, until they raised the price to $2 a ticket. Then he wouldn’t buy one until the pot was over $150 million. He stopped when we started to go to a different gas station that doesn’t sell them. When spend a lot less on gas now, and save a bit more by not buying the lottery tickets.

i’ve never bought a lottery ticket.
our state finally passed a law allowing all that … on the grounds that part of the funds from it all would go to the school system.
    never happened of course. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. My sister was a lawyer before she retired (very well, I might add!). We teased her relentlessly about her profession, and made sure she never missed a lawyer joke! No, I don’t buy lottery ticketsโ€”consider them a tax on the stupid!

    • Jean says:

It sounds as if your sister did well enough to shrug off the jokes. ๐Ÿ™‚

One of my favorite cartoons was Frank and Ernest looking at a poster about the lottery. One says to the other, “Winning is crucial to my retirement plans.”

  5. Rummuser says:

No. I don’t even know where I can.

  6. Linda Sand says:

I get tempted sometimes but my husband calls them a tax on people who can’t do math and I don’t like admitting I can’t do math. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Cindi says:

I’ve bought one a few times (meaning 4or 5 times) and then was GREATLY disappointed when not even one of the numbers were correct.
I also despise going into gas marts so that’s another reason I don’t.
For about 3 weeks though, some of the girls that I like at work (not the bean ones) had the grand idea to all chip in together and increase our chances of winning.
But we all quickly got bored with that.
    That’s in Iowa.
NOW here in stupid Illinois, they don’t pay lottery winners if it’s over a few thousand but put a hold on it because the state is in massive debt.
Truly, why would anyone buy a ticket in Illinois?

    Mean, not bean!
    Oh jeez.

lotto and associated other prize things are either daily, twice weekly, or weekly…I occasionally have a flutter on them, but even with 8 lines I find I have nothing to show for it other than another piece of paper to recycle…

then I take a turn around the lowest scratch-ticket and of course get the measly $3 or free ticket…

then I go off them and think that a nice gooey cream bun would be better money spent!

  10. Cathy in NZ says:

I’ve probably got the profile to do these kind of “money wasting” stances – as I don’t have a great of money anyway – but my upbringing and most of my siblings – never frittered much away in the first place.

I would rather do what i did today…(remember my public transport is zero$ now) – I took the warm and dry train into the city, and bought a bacon/cheese french toast sandwich for lunch… then as it started to rain badly again…I zoomed back to home base by another train.

Then I went to the food market and bought vittles for me!
