No Tree Squirrels

Tree squirrels are rare up on the land, but there are many chipmunk-looking golden-mantled ground squirrels.

Montana and Sammy are well aware that some of them frequent Andy’s woodpile. (Occasionally one will sit on top of the pile and look at Andy through the window.)

Presumably there was no ground squirrel present Thursday evening when these pictures were taken — Montana didn’t tear the woodpile apart to get to one. She has been known to do that.

I know squirrels are a menace in numerous ways, especially stealing birdfeed, but they’re my favourite animals all the same. I love their appearance, alertness and agility. The dogs will have to be pretty quick on the draw to get near a squirrel – they make off at lightning speed at the slightest hint of danger.

  2. Those pictures are terrific! They tell the story, but not the whole story—that would only happen if you could have included the squirrel! I wonder what most dogs would do if they ever caught a squirrel?

montana’s head in the woodpile! LOL!
don’t you know they were in heaven with all the squirrely scents!
    that’s a handsome little squirrel.
I agree with nick! I love them too.

We had the pleasure of seeing a mongoose stroll into our home yesterday. For a moment, I thought that it was an oversized squirrel, but it turned out to be a mongoose. After a standoff with Chutki, it simply went away first into our garden and then outside through a gap in the fence.

    Love this post!
    Cartoon is so true!
Montana and Sammy at the woodpile really made me SMILE.
    Love little chipmunks.
The other day as I sat in the dentist’s chair (high anxiety) the hygienist asked if I wanted the TV on to watch and I said no.
The reason was because there was this huge double window and I could see birds at a feeder and bunnies running around and there was a little chipmunk too!
That scene helped me feel more peaceful than anything on TV!

I agree, that would be much more peaceful than TV. My dentist used to be in a place with windows, and it was very peaceful. Now she’s moved downtown and the rooms are dark. She’s happy with the move, I think it’s a bit sad.

like almost anything we don’t have, we basically want -especially if they are cute…

anything that we do have that is a pest as such, we want them “not”

then there are the poisonous, bad for our well being – they in another category all together!

    • Jean says:

Squirrels are cute, but they can be pests, too. They can cause all sorts of problems if they get into the house and tear up insulation, chew on wires, etc. But they are clever and fun to watch outside.
