In a comment on yesterday’s post Diane mentioned some bear hunters who stumbled across a grizzly bear den. They were seriously injured but lived to tell the tale.

I’m just the opposite, I have no desire to look for bears. Years ago I heard a crashing in the trees nearby and started walking the other way, just in case it was a bear. I figured I was being foolish, that it was just elk, and that was why Andy saw a lot more elk than I did.

Then a few minutes later Andy yelled,

Hey, Jean! Did you see the bear walking down the road?

Uh, no, and I didn’t mind missing it. I also decided I would keep my strategy of keeping my distance from animals crashing in the woods.

  1. Normally, all animals in the wild keep their distance from humans (human’s being the ones with guns), but mother bears are a different story. They are fiercely protective of their offspring, and will attack without provocation!

I have never had the experience of walking around where wild animals roam.

the marine last year on his annual backpacking trip in the mountains had a bear wandering about the camp. looking for an easy meal no doubt.
they had taken all the precautions of concealing the food items.
he said you could hear it breathing and snorting outside his tent.
at least he has stopped back packing alone. thank heavens for that.
    but I say. . . alone or with a group . . .
    NO THANK YOU!
I will stay in the city and look at beautiful pictures of the bears and cougars and wolves and well . . . you get the gist of it. i’m a coward!

I’m a coward too! I have no desire to be sleeping in a tent with a bear outside searching for food. I have enough adventure dealing with technical problems down here.

    peas in a pod!

We had a bear walk into our campsite once. As soon as it left my husband started washing dishes from the meal we just finished. He intended to stay the night there in a nylon tent! We put the dishes in a plastic bag and packed them out still dirty! I’m not staying with bears!!!

    • Jean says:

Wise decision! If a bear walks into a campsite with people there it’s used to people and is dangerous. Up on the land after the fire one of our neighbors put food and water out for the bears and took pictures of them. He was trying to be nice, but that was dangerous for the bears as well as the humans. He stopped after people explained.

again ,no bears or anything wild or that big – well unless you put a wild pig in the picture – one with tusks or so – but they are not found in the city (to my knowledge) and it is always hunters after then anyway…

what is serious here is the shooting of another human, accidentally whilst out hunting – goats, pigs or the wild boar, deer, duck season etc in the wilds of NZ…

  7. Cindi says:

    nope.
    you won’t find me camping
    especially around bear country!
    or where there are snakes!
