Self-Driving Cars

Ford has just announced that they expect to have level four self-driving cars by 2021 instead of the previous 2025. Level four means the cars will be completely self-driving but only for a specific environment — city driving.

And Uber will start testing self-driving cars in Pittsburgh by the end of the month. For now the Uber cars will have a human in the driver’s seat — in case of emergencies and because so far it’s illegal not to have one.

At any rate, things are changing fast. It should be interesting to watch.

Well…. I can totally understand why these cars would be better.
I’ve ridden with people who are horrible drivers, so I suppose this would be safer.
And then people could “text and ride” instead of “text and drive” which is terrifying that people do that.
    Yep, definitely a good thing.
But I enjoy driving and this would take all the fun out of it.
    I wouldn’t want one.

They probably won’t come in time for Andy and me, but with my bad eyes it would be blessing. As it is he has to do the driving except in our little town.

I cannot imagine using a driverless car ever!

    wow.
just experiencing my own ‘technical difficulties’ in the computer realm…
where it was working one minute and the next… dead in the water…
I wouldn’t be the first to try one!
but as you say… just part of this world’s evolution and very interesting!

    • Jean says:

I wouldn’t be the first to try it, but I would love to have one once most of the bugs are worked out They’re expecting them to be safer than the human-driven ones. Insurance companies are already trying to figure out how to deal with the decrease in accidents.

I am with Ramana. A driverless car? HELP! Gives me the shivers. I’d rather be in charge of my own destiny. I can see it now, as Tammy says, “error” message. No thanks. If I want to end up in a ditch I am perfectly able to drive there myself.

Kaitlin and Torben have a Tesla, which has autopilot. It still has a brake and steering wheel, but apparently it does part of the driving and they’re already used to it.

  5. Linda Sand says:

I can’t imagine sitting in the driver’s seat while resisting the urge to drive. I’ve read that the true driverless cars will have no steering wheel or pedals but I’ve been known to use my invisible passenger-side brake and my lean-to-the-side steering more than once. 🙂

    • Jean says:

No brake or steering wheel would take a lot of getting used to. But apparently they will first be used as taxis in cities, so the passenger wouldn’t be driving anyway. I will be watching with interest.

  6. I’ll adopt my usual wait-and-see attitude and suspend judgement on driverless cars. Should be interesting to watch this unfold, but be warned, things happen very fast in the tech world. We could all be in such cars sooner than we think!

sounds crazy – but probably a lot of our now things – seemed impossible…

what would they do about “road rage” – yep we see/hear about that from to time…and a friend of mine got partially caught up in one incident recently – she managed to get her car around the 2 drivers – one of whom was a young woman wielding a baseball bat!

Can’t imagine who else has come in contact with her “bat”…
