The Sound of Music

Recently Rummuser had a post about our favorite music. Mine is the original recording of The Song of Music.

I went to Stanford-in-Germany the last two quarters of my junior year — considered an insane idea for a physics major, but one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Still, I did have all physics and math classes my senior year. I vaguely remember it was a lot of work and pressure, but thing I remember most is how happy The Sound of Music made me.

My boyfriend had graduated the previous year and lent me his stereo system and records. I was lucky enough to get one of the rare single rooms in the dorm, so I played the record almost every day.

(For more songs, go to Youtube).

Most people associate Julie Andrews with The Sound of Music. For me it’s Mary Martin, and I’m not the only one. The fellow who uploaded the video wrote,

DISCLAIMER: I do not have any affiliation at all with anything to do with the Sound of Music and associated persons/companies. I am merely a fan who wants others to be able to listen to this music. Please do not delete my video, Youtube.

How touching is that?

Beutelsbach? When were you there? I see Stanford has since relocated to Berlin – as I suppose befits such a prestigious institution.

Sound of Music? And there I was, thinking Jean – considering her science background – more of a Stockhausen person. Only joking.

What I like most about your particular rendition is the background crackling sound of a camp fire. I remember it well. And another loss to mankind: In a fit of temper you may crack eine Schallplatte over your knee, a CD you can only hurl – not worth the effort.

I was there for six months in 1960. Needless to say, I have fond memories. When I went they still gave us three-day weekends to encourage us to travel. We cheerfully took advantage of it.

I still have a vinyl record of The Sound of Music, and I also bought the CD.

I well remember a family holiday at a hotel in Torquay, Devon, where the background music was non-stop musicals. Many of the songs are still stuck in my brain, though not Maria. I’ve never been a fan of musicals though. My taste is more Annie Lennox than Julie Andrews!

Strange! Just a few weeks ago, I was singing along with the July Andrews version of My Favourite Things and Manjiree wanted to see The Sound Of Music again. I have promised to get her a DVD soon if I cannot borrow it from someone. I however got her a copy of The Fiddler On The Roof DVD. I had seen a Broadway revival version without Zero Mostel and since Manjiree had not seen it, I ordered the DVD of the film version. Another great musical. My favourite in it is still Do You Love Me?

  4. Chorus Line is a newer musical, but that, as well as Les Miz are more my cup of tea. I do like Sound of Music, but must say, my husband, who is a pianist, has worn it to death!

I cannot say before this that I have ever heard mary martin sing!
even in her peter pan days.
my favorite song from the Julie Andrews version of sound of music is the one in the gazebo when they realized they loved each other…
“i must have done something good.”
    and…
the wonderful things people share on you tube is so heartening. i’m always touched.

    • Jean says:

      Yes, that’s a great scene/song too. 🙂

And the sharing isn’t just on youtube. I get most of my technical help from people on the internet. In general that’s better than tech support.

interesting, I’m not fond of musicals, I’ve been to a few with a friend, who just loves them – but I still haven’t got the hang of them…

I like some of the songs, and I went to some stage productions in San Francisco years ago, but I wouldn’t like to sit through one now. I don’t like to sit much.
