Put Up or Shut Up

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) called Sunday for President Trump to either prove his claim that President Barack Obama tapped the phones in Trump Tower during last year’s election campaign or drop the accusation.

“The president has one of two choices, either retract or provide the information that the American people deserve,” McCain said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I have no reason to believe that the charge is true, but I also believe that the president of the United States could clear this up in a minute.”

Other top lawmakers are saying the same thing. I feel much more comfortable with their response than with Nunes’ saying the press shouldn’t have taken Trump’s tweets literally. Uh, no. McCain is right, he didn’t directly criticize Trump, but he said the accusation shouldn’t be taken lightly. As he said,

If the allegation is left out there, it undermines the confidence the American people have in the entire way that the government does business.

Good for him! All may not be lost.

I admire this senator for doing this despite being a Republican.

We need more honest people like him for our system of checks and balances to work. Neither party is monolithic, and in fact Trump isn’t really a Republican. He just ran as a Republican and got elected — a political hostile takeover?

  2. I’ve always admired John McCain, although most of the time he is the lone wolf crying in the wilderness. But his arguments are correct. What will it take for Trump to rectify his (probably false) statement? Or at least explain it!

  3. Cathy in NZ says:

my biggest thought on the matter…why is it even an issue? I can’t really understand either why it was an issue, Obama was standing down…

but as you say in reply – Trump should think very carefully with his “tweets” and what they could mean, both misconstruing and meaningless through to even misconduct!
