A Seasonal Change

So Halloween is over, and our local supermarket immediately cleared their seasonal area of candy and other paraphernalia and replaced it with Christmas candy and decorations. They’ve long given up on Thanksgiving.

The big difference between Halloween and Christmas is for Halloween there were fewer decorations and even more candy!

Do you have anything like that where you live?

No. Post Divali, the winter has set in with the last of the rains having left us in the Western and Central parts of India, while the North Eastern Monsoon has set in in the South East.

The nights and early mornings are chilly and I have taken out the warm clothes for morning wear.

Christmas focus will start in our shops only by about the end of the first week of December as the Christian population in India is very small at 5.84% spread all over the country.

We enjoy seeing the changes in the displays. We always walk through that area between the start of their Halloween and end of their Easter displays. We mostly skip it at other times because no colorful candy, etc. I’m not even a candy eater, but they do tickle the little kid in me.

  3. My sentiments exactly! I love the cartoon!

I bought gifts all year around as I saw appropriate things. But the decorations NEVER went up until the day after Thanksgiving. And I still resent stores that push that season.

I like what they do in this particular store, but I like their Halloween displays best.

I always had my Christmas shopping done and presents sent by Thanksgiving. The tree went up 6 days before Christmas, after we went up to the land to cut it down. Now we don’t decorate except for Andy’s “tree” on the roof of the house up in the mountains. The neighbors love it — the lights go on December 19th and off after New Year’s Day. So we are still following some tradition there. 🙂

  5. Looks like our stores. I can recall Christmas items didn’t go up to after Thanksgiving. But my parents had a rottery phone, so one can figure I’m over 50…Coffee is on

Halloween gear only seems to be in the cheap import stores, but it doesn’t take over as such, just a small cleared space – and whatever was in the space, pushed up against something else.

However, when I was browsing in one of our larger dept stores, I noted that the Xmas stock had arrived…and then I noticed yesterday that there was some decorations on the verandah shop underhangs – I don’t know whether Santa’s grotto is getting underway in the Mall, as I didn’t go in there…

Not sure what I’m doing for that actual day yet, seems far away (yet) – I do know I’m about to flit off on a retreat at VP possibly in a cJust a few days

The Christmas sales push seems to start earlier and earlier every year. The stacks of mince pies and Christmas puddings have been around for several weeks. By the time Christmas actually arrives, I’m sick and tired of the whole shenanigans.

There are many retail outlets who only deal in seasonal / festival goods and keep changing their merchandise as each season / festival ends. This is possible as we have some thing or the other happening throughout the year.
