The Good Year 2017

I just read another article about how humanity as a whole did better in 2017:

It seemed awful. But overall, it was a great year for humanity.
9 ways the world got a lot better in 2017

The nine ways are

  1. Less famine
  2. Fewer war deaths
  3. Fewer deaths from natural disasters
  4. Progress against pestilence
  5. Greater life expectancy
  6. More democracy
  7. Expanding rights for women and sexual minorities
  8. Fewer people living on $2 a day
  9. Greener energy

The article ends with,

So for all of the horror that remains, it is still reasonable to suggest that the average human being on planet Earth has never had it so good — even if the average human being seems doubtful about that claim.

I guess it depends what you “assume” or “believe” is happening, but I suppose it’s good on some levels…

Even if the average person was better off in 2017, it doesn’t mean everyone was. 2017 was a good year for me. What about you?

    • Cathy in NZ says:

I came to live in this new pad, which is vastly different to my previous one – some of the differences took more time to get my head around

(we won’t talk about the noise/dirt stuff of now 2018 and by the time you ask me next year, it will be a mere very early memory)

I had more time for me, especially when my volunteer job finished…and i could concentrate a lot more on “me” stuff

Although, unfortunately I didn’t know it – but my medical health was sliding a bit…coming right again, but very slowly, much self-management in place. Only a few of very close network know, as I think many people wouldn’t understand

(S doesn’t, keeps whittering on about catching up…and S is what I deem a negative, & I can’t cope right now with negative, when I cope it’s usually with small doses of S’s problems)

I was able to make a bold step to go away for a few days to a retreat centre and it was so successful, I went again later. And I know that will continue to be a place I can easily go…

      – wish I was there today, I think the last of the concrete is coming up – so huge noise/banging as the slabs hit the truck (very much in my ear space…I had a phone call, & I thought how wonderful portable phone, as I ended up in the laundry due to banging)!

a lot of other good “me” things happened … that have been positive items to add, to do and so on…

    • Jean says:

That retreat was a real winner, but I’m sorry about the noisy construction. Hopefully it will be over and forgotten soon!

    • Cathy in NZ says:

the last slabs of useless concrete to be taken up tomorrow, but it’s the slabs adjacent to my workroom & bedroom – so it will be noisy and banging finish. there is still some drains but at the other unit…

the next bit of work is the framework for new concrete driveway – I guess that will involve a different kind of noise…

i must admit that when any contractor takes off for the day, silence is regained until about now 6pm/ish when homes around become people orientated …

I suppose it sounds good if you are one of the ‘average’ people.

  3. Rummuser says:

I personally saw a very good 2017 in my city, state and country as well as among my family and friends.

  4. Mike says:

2017 wasn’t that bad except for health issues that crept up on my — my fault, actually… should have been prevented. A lot of good things happened, in my view.

  5. I liked your assessment of 2017—hopefully it bodes well for this coming year!

It’s true that in many ways the global population is better off than it’s ever been. We only have the opposite impression because the media focuses relentlessly on all the disasters, wars, dictators, terrorists and other negative goings-on that give us a very slanted picture of the reality.

    • Jean says:

It’s up to us to keep a balance. Most people are wired to pay more attention to bad news, and no doubt that his been good for human survival. Which is why it sells.
