We’re Back!

We boarded the Amtrak Southwest Chief at Lamy, New Mexico last Wednesday, September 25th, and arrived in Chicago the following afternoon — the train takes about 25 hours each way. We got back yesterday afternoon.

I’ll write a bit more about the trip in the days to come. Mostly Andy and I don’t like to travel, but we had a great time visiting with Kaitlin, Torben and the pups.

I wrote and scheduled my posts ahead of time and answered the comments while I was there — that system seems to have worked just fine.

Do you enjoy traveling? If so, where do you like to go?

I think as long as Carmen and I get to chat as we go along I like travel ok. This means a preference for public transport.

Mostly I go places to visit friends. Places I love for the places themselves are Hobart and Far North Queensland (tropical – so winter very much preferred; and the summer for Hobart).

I love to travel. Anywhere, where at the end of the journey I have people waiting to spend time with me. I am not a place person and sight seeing is a secondary benefit. I like long train journeys too.

Where? The American west, mostly — which, of course, includes New Mexico, along with other states from the Mexican border on up into Canada. However, the only American state we’ve not visited is Hawaii.

I’ve always disliked sitting in a car all day, buses on those Overseas tours, planes with long waits at airports.
When I was little, on the way to Florida (3 day trip then) I’d ask every few miles starting before we even got out of town, “When are we going to get to “Florla”.

    • bikehikebabe says:

The answer was “We’ll drive A L L day today & A l l day tomorrow & Al l day the next day & then we get to Florida.” The speed limit was 35 miles per hour then. World War ll.

I’m with you. I hate sitting for long periods. I’m glad Andy isn’t interested in going on tours.

Yes, I do like travelling. Makes coming home so sweet.

My preferred method driving. Feels like being master of your own destiny. An illusion. I know. But as illusions go it’s almost real.

My flying adventures surreal. Not least that stopover in Beirut on way to Hong Kong. Send me travelling and the unlikely is bound to happen. Which is why I’d advise anyone, other than my son, to not travel with me.

I like to travel as well, but I other than a trip to New Plymouth this year for a conference – not able to get about as much as I desire…

There are a couple of places in New Zealand, I have never been to and intrigue me to somehow get there sometime. Mostly they are the tip of peninsulas or coastal wild places…

    • Jean says:

I can understand your desire to see more of New Zealand. We went to the South Island about 48 years ago and still remember how gorgeous it was.

  7. Took a train from MSP to Montana once. Long way, not much to see between the two. But I’ll have to admit (althought it was slow) it was a very comfortable way to travel, much better than a 3-aisle-3 jet from MSP to Manchester.

Hope you had insurance on the Keebler French Vanilla Cremes. 🙂

    • Jean says:

Andy refuses to fly because of the regimentation, and taking the train is quicker and more comfortable than driving — even though it just crawls in spots.

In fact the insurance company tried — they gave us $11.20 for all three packages because they couldn’t be replaced. They didn’t understand the real value, of course.
