Advertising vs Reality

Neither Andy nor I are McDonald’s fans, but the above video impressed us. McDonald’s ads are a lot closer to reality than a lot of ones we’ve see. We often browse the frozen dinner section of our supermarket, and when Andy sees a package that takes his fancy, he laughs and says, “I’m a sucker for a pretty face.” We may buy it anyway, but we’re under no illusions that the contents will look anything like the picture.

What about you? Do you think McDonald’s is doing better than a lot of companies?

I am not a great fan of any of the fast food chains but do occasionally send for a pizza. I however send for that pizza from a local entrepreneur who established his business much before the big boys moved in as he is definitely much better.

I however find that McDonald, KFC, Pizza Hut etc are all struggling in India for the kind of volumes that the West offers. This is primarily because the Indian fast food alternatives are ubiquitous and much cheaper and offer greater value for money. The local Udupi restaurants for instance have people taking down your name as you enter and calling you up when seats become vacant.

The Ad was Reality clip is fascinating and as you probably know by now reinforces my view about subliminal messages being sent to us.

When we need a fast food restaurant we go to Subway’s — it has healthy alternatives to the usual fat and salty. In general we prefer our own food to restaurants.

We don’t often stop at fast food places unless we’re on the road heading somewhere and want a quick stop for a meal. I used to go to McDonalds frequently, but that stopped quite a few years ago. When we want burgers, we go to a local burger place that was once mentioned in Southern Living Magazine as serving the “Best Burger in Arkansas.” ( short video that shows interior: http://youtu.be/uvPzBf_-xjU ).

The video shows that McDonald’s ads don’t show what you really get. They do more business, probably because they’ve been around longer. ??

We read health news so we don’t eat beef (burgers). We don’t eat “fast food” either.

As I told Rummuser, if we have to buy a quick lunch we go to Subway’s. They’ve done well by offering more healthful alternatives. Although the local one has been “Opening Soon!” for months now. Don’t know if it will ever make it.

Use to go to Wendy’s from time to time but not a McDonald’s fan, except maybe for their french fries. Actually I’m not a Wendy’s fan either but I have gone there more than other places. Never been to a Hardee’s or a Burger King. As to your question of who is doing better… I am clueless. Seems like they have all been around for a long, long time.

    • Jean says:

I’m not a hamburger fan, so Burger King is out. Can’t remember what Hardee’s had — it was years ago and has probably changed by now. Not that Andy and I have. 😀

I’ve never eaten at McDonalds in my life. I’m not keen on fast food, except maybe the home-cooked variety. But I agree about ads seldom reflecting the reality. What I notice most often is that the size of the food items on the packet is usually a lot larger than the same items when they come out of the packet! And of course on the packet they always look juicier and tastier because of clever photography.

I read somewhere about the ad v reality – that wasn’t a mean thing to do the larger colourful advert and then find the difference when you bought it…

I’m not what they call a great customer at these types of places, as I hardly ever buy the “deal” because I don’t want the soggy chips or the fizzy drink…

But I do buy from them, because I know generically these places have spotless hygiene and I am not going to regret it!
