Global Warming

The walrus has lost its home due to global warming and has chosen to reside in my math book. I apologize for any inconvenience caused on his behalf.
—A student with more interest in drawing than in math.

I enjoyed math when I was in school, but I would love to have the student’s talent for drawing. If the teacher gave him credit for cleverness, then global warming has done at least one person some good.

I did well with maths up to Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry. In fact I was in the liberal arts stream in high school and this was considered enough to get me ready for life as an adult. In Business School, I had to come to grips with Calculus and Statistics and that threw me. My Tutor and Professor of Quantitative Methods, gave me special coaching to be able to handle it and without that great kindness my life would have been very different to what it became. Sadly, we did not excuses like global warming those days! http://rummuser.com/?p=7285

Well, that’s a bit more original than “the dog ate my homework”. As a kid I was good at both maths and drawing, but the maths was encouraged (essential life skill etc) while the drawing was mostly ignored. I suspect if I was in school today, attitudes wouldn’t have changed that much.

It’s a lot worse now here in the States. Apparently the usual end-of-year play for one kindergarten was canceled because the kids needed to study. Standardized testing has pushed out exploration and love of learning, even in the early years.

math forced upon me still gives me chills.
odd that some people are simply not prone to ‘getting’ math and others just love it!
i think … i hope … she recognized a little artistic genius there at work. not just in the drawing … but in the humor and the irony and innate wisdom beyond his years.

I’m afraid I was one of the math lovers. I agree about the student. With his wit he clearly will do well in life.
