Bears

Here in town we’ve been warned to be careful if we use Dempster Dumpsters — there may be a bear inside! A fellow resident posted this video:

For an even more interesting bear story read KB’s A Magical Meeting with a Bear and Her Cub. Here’s the picture KB took of the cub:

KB had previously taken a course on bear behavior, so she was able to soothe the mother, take the cub’s picture, and walk away with Shyla, her canine buddy.

Wow!

Back in ’63, my grandfather woke me up in the middle of the night to see something. Turned out it was a young black bear doing much the same thing in the trash can next to our camper at Lewis Lake campground in Yellowstone National Park. By the time I got back to Yellowstone 9 years later, with Karen and a 6 month old daughter, all the trash cans had been replaced with bear proof receptacles and visitors were lucky to catch even a glimpse of a bear.

Somethings been getting into our trash, probably a raccoon. We’re keeping the tops of the trash cans strapped down with bungee cords and that seems to work.

Those bear-proof trash containers have probably saved a lot of lives — both human and bear. After the fire someone in our neighborhood up there was feeding the bears for a while. Not a wise idea!

and what a beautiful picture. serious little bear.
i love bears. but probably in the wild… not that up close and personal!
the marine of course sees a lot of them in the mountains where he hikes.
when they were working rebuilding parts of the collegiate trail last year… one came into the camp every night and tried its best to get to the food. then thwarted… he would just mosey around and sniff at the edge of the tents. never bothered anyone.
    but … wow.
one little swipe with a claw… tent open meet mister bear !

We were bicycling in Canada, overnight in a camp ground with tent, a bear trap to get a grizzly who had killed a girl. Our site was next to it & all the other campers had trailers. We moved. Sounds like a made-up story but wasn’t. So went my life—upside down in a kayak in icy waters–etc. 🙁 or 😀

    love the dumpster video!
That little bear acts like a secret agent sneaking into the dumpster and looking around to see if anyone is watching! Too funny.
And that KB! Wow! Fearless and an amazing photographer!
