Hopeless

I feel much better now that I have given up hope.
—Ashleigh Brilliant

That’s where I am right now. I’m doing major reorganizing, recycling, tossing things out, and it looks hopelessly messy in the process. It reminds me of when Andy and I got back from a trip once — the suitcases, mail and newspapers looked overwhelming. He said,

It’s impossible. All we can do is walk out, close the door behind us, and start all over somewhere else.

At the moment I’m just putting on psychological blinders, doing a bit at a time, and giving up hope that it will ever look better. I’m guessing it will surprise me one day, but in the meantime I’m happy ignoring the mess.

Have you ever felt this way?

That’s how I feel about our 24 year old son’s bedroom. I used to keep some semblance of tidy when he was young, but when he reached a certain age, I said it’s up to him, after all he is the one who has to live with it.
Well, that was the last day his room was neat.
There’s no point in nagging – wasted energy and it has no effect anyway. Selective deafness 🙂
I shudder when I walk past, and now just shut the door, only going in to remove and wash his bedding – there’s no way I’m leaving THAT up to him, it’d never get done.
I put on blinkers, shut his door – out of sight…..

I think the worst mess is when you’ve just moved into a new house with piles of boxes and bits and pieces and you have to sort them all out and put them in their new locations. Though it’s very satisfying when it’s finished and everything’s finally in place.

Marie’s room was neat as an unoccupied hotel room. You couldn’t walk through her sister’s room, with everything on the floor. So we gave Lydia a shelf, plenty deep enough, in the storage room. She loved it. Brought her friends over from school to see it.

I’m starting to clear out things I love, but you can’t keep everything when you’re getting more. I’d love to see my house stark, like rooms in that slick expensive House magazine. Beautiful to look at, but boring to live in.

Yes absolutely – in fact I’m going through a “clearinghouse” session of my own. I’ve only been here three years, how did I accumulate so much, and whatever for?? I did find some great tips from “YouTube”. Of seven rooms I have three to go. Jean, you have my sympathy and sincere good wishes!

Hopeless? Never. Frustrated, often. But, in retrospect, it all sounds so silly when everything has been sorted out.

I feel that way almost all the time 🙂

I love Andy’s line… Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do that?

I loved Andy’s line, too — it still makes me smile. On the other hand, I love my apartment. This complex has been home for 40 years, this particular apartment for 38. The old landlord did as little maintenance as possible, so things are far from perfect, but that could be said of Andy and me too!
