Nature

This comic is a powerful way of saying nature isn’t always as idyllic as we would like.

It’s especially relevant in light of the little boy who was attacked and drowned by an alligator at a Disney resort in Florida. He was wading in only a few inches of water, but it was at dusk, a prime hunting time for alligators. Apparently Floridians have been raised to know the dangers, but if you’re from Nebraska and are in a Disney resort….

Disney is now going to warn visitors about alligators.

Nature never pretended to be idylic (that’s in the eye of the romantically inclined human). Nature just is, Capital IS. It’s not cruel, it’s not kind. It just is.

The little boy, Jean? Dear dog in heaven. When I hear stories like that I don’t know what to do with parents like that … something … A two year old (forget alligators, sharks and other dangers) should never be left unsupervised near any water – not even in the (un) safety of the bathtub at home. It is so irresponsible I could scream. Yeah, sure, they say the parents were only a few meters away. Does anyone know how little time it takes for a small child (remember: small lung capacity) to drown? I know this from close proximity when friends of mine took their two small kids on some luxury holiday. The mother turned her back for a minute – by the time she turned round again her son had toppled over – and drowned. Yes, drowned – in the few inches of water that constitute a puddling pool. Was the most tragic funeral I have ever been to. The mother who was, because of her son’s precarious start to life, anxious if anything basically went to pieces. For years. Anyway, that’s a slightly different story.

As to feeling “sorry” for the parents. Sure. Though I do not feel as sorry for them as I do for the poor little mite during his last few minutes. To go out as terrified as he must have been … My god.

    U

    Disney is wiser by hindsight!
