People Are Watching

Republicans have long dreamed of a unified White House, Senate and House, working in lockstep to carry out a conservative agenda of lowering taxes, reducing government regulations and repealing the Affordable Care Act, among other issues.

But on Tuesday, in the opening hours of the 115th Congress, two powerful bursts from President-elect Donald Trump’s Twitter account left his fellow Republicans scrambling to respond — and wondering if they’re in for four years of such missives, if not more.

The House Republicans had voted behind closed doors to take away the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics. A lot of people had protested before the Trump tweet, but his action “amplified the discomfort”. Clearly a lot of people are watching to see what happens, and they’re more than willing to voice their opinions. That can’t be all bad.

    hallelujah!
“behind closed doors” is a phrase that should describe very few if any scenarios in our government. possibly diplomatic matters aside. but certainly never a matter of ethics! good grief. what is WRONG with those people!!!
not just a swamp. but a swamp full of snakes.
never thought i’d ever say it. but at least this time… good for trump!

I have mentioned elsewhere that I am beginning to be more optimistic about 2017 and would like to comment on it post event when I will be wiser by hindsight. There is no point in trying to predict the unpredictable.

Actually there is some use in making predictions. That’s what scientists do all the time. When their predictions don’t turn out the way they expected they learn a lot. It tests their models of the world.

But waiting and watching with no expectations works too. It’s a lot less work!

This reminds me of a woman we elected president of a Home Owners’ Association. She thought that made her dictator until we set her straight. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised at what Trump actually thinks is OK to do.

    • Jean says:

I don’t think most people will be surprised about what he tries — I expect he will be surprised about what he can’t do. I could be wrong, but it will be interesting to see.

I heard somewhere, that some of your previous presidents have had some strange ideas, or they have been thought to be “trigger happy” & somehow the nation has muddled through…time will tell, I guess.

Mankind has gone through all sorts of crises in the past and will no doubt go through a lot more. Fingers crossed that ours won’t be too bad!
