Roombas

I have a Roomba vacuum cleaner and love it, but I don’t have a cat to ride on it.

In this video I like the dog much better than the cat:

Do you have any gadgets that make life simpler for you? Or are you like Rummuser and have hired help, do it all yourself, or?

Jean, apart from the cat clipping the dog round the ears which they most definitely do, this is just staged nonsense. First of all, cats hate noise. You turn on the vacuum cleaner they do a runner; they most certainly wouldn’t sit still on one as long as that. Still, I suppose there is always an exception to the rule.

In answer to your question: I prefer to do my own. After all: I know best, don’t I? A marvellous excuse used by many in my life to not lift even one little finger because, after all, “Ursula does it so much better”. It’s ok. I don’t mind. I was my mother’s chivy which was absolutely fine because she hated housework whereas I didn’t, and anyway there were my siblings who needed not so much wiping their noses as her attention.

There were two short periods in my adult life when I had to employ household help. Both on occasion of being hopelessly immersed in some assignments which left me little time to attend to anything other than cooking. The first help, an elderly woman – a motherly type – was lovely. The second? I wouldn’t call her lovely. But she did a good job, most efficiently – even if she did keep giving off a vibe of disdain as I was dashing out of the house.

A friend of mine and her mother (the latter now dead), both American, have/had this dream to retire in a hotel. Everything being taken care off. Na, that’s my idea of tedium.

But, yes, if and when push comes to shove there is always India.

“…this is just staged nonsense.” Not at all, there are numerous video clips of cats riding on Roombas. And what makes you think Roombas are noisy?

I would have been surprised if you didn’t do your own housework.

I’ve got an online pal, who came home one day from work and thought there were burglars in the house – came in found robot clean swirling about – so after a few such occasions, put up webcam and found it was easy for cat to jump and have a ride…

Nope the only servant here/me…and I don’t have such a cleaner, I think it wouldn’t get much done too many floor rugs to trip it up.

Cats do seem to like riding on them. I have throw rugs on top of our carpet and the Roomba doesn’t have problems with them as long as they’re lying flat.

That’s funny about your online pal. 🙂

I bought a vacuum cleaner for our maid, but she refused to use it claiming that her way of sweeping with a broom and mopping was better. I gave away the cleaner. I have other gadgets like microwave, OTG, blenders etc but I no longer go in to the kitchen having abdicated in favour of the DIL. The only gadget that I now use is my smartphone. I don’t think that the computer comes under that classification!

  4. So far, lately I’ve held off getting some cleaning help, or a even a Roomba, although it would be nice, given the hours I spend writing. My practice is to keep kitchen and bathrooms clean, leave the vacuuming and dusting until later . Sometimes, if I leave it too long, Bob helps. But I’d rather not go into that!

I occasionally (less than once a year?) will hire someone for a couple of hours to help but have no interest in having someone on a regular basis. Andy does the housework up on the land, and neither one of us spends much time on it.

Our rent in this apartment includes weekly cleaning. But, they do what my mother called “a lick and a promise”. I’ve been told they do a once a year deep cleaning but I’ve yet to see how effective that is. Still what they do is better than me ignoring everything until I can’t stand it any longer. 🙂

I do make the yoghurt but very often just boil the milk and leave it to cool. When the DIL sees that, she sets it and informs me that I can continue solving my crossword puzzles!

Gadgets that make life simpler? I wish. I do most of the housework and what I use is much the same as my mother used 60 years ago – a hoover, a broom, a duster, a feather duster, a wet rag, liquid cleaner etc. I would love a gadget that sucked all the dust out of those inaccessible nooks and crannies without me having to move furniture and crawl around.

    • Jean says:

Unfortunately the Roomba doesn’t do that. As I understand it, most people one can hire to do housework won’t do it either. 🙁
