It Pays to Ask

Yesterday I wrote that Andy likes to read the Area Forecast Discussion at the national weather site. The problem is it seemed to be stuck on July 31, so I wrote to them:

Have you given up on updating the Area Forecast Discussion? We miss it! It seems to be stuck on July 31.

Thank you.

They answered:

Good Morning,

Thank you for the information. We are sorry for the glitch in our system. There is a nation-wide computer bug affecting all NWS offices, and for us at NWS Albuquerque it’s causing the July 31st Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) to be erroneously labeled as the ‘Current Version’.

We are still producing AFD’s, but unfortunately since the July 31st is grabbing the ‘Current Version’ slot, the latest AFD is always being shunted to a ‘Previous Version’ slot. The link below is this morning’s AFD as of 5:49am MDT August 3rd. The current work around for this is to click on the ‘Previous Version’ option (see attached image). The most current AFD should be one of the previous versions. If July 31st still appears when you click Previous Version, try again to go back one more version until you reach the latest AFD. Unfortunately this has happened yesterday, and the most recent AFD was in slot 3.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope to have the problem fixed soon.

Thanks again,

Tracy

What a friendly site! I’m so glad I asked.

    wow. that IS impressive!
and you got a response so quickly.
I often watch the weather channel on tv. put on by the national weather service.
it always gives a ‘local weather’ forecast too for about 5 days I think.
and I enjoy a lot of the special programs they show in the evenings.
do you all get that on your cable network?
that is… if he just likes weather in general.

We don’t have cable but I do have the Weather Channel app for my iPad, also the Accuweather app. They’re both convenient.

  2. Wow, I’m impressed! The response was quick and polite, a win, win!

great response and also an explanation on where you should “now look” until the get the “bug” fixed… – most of us wouldn’t “think” to look back for current!

Amazing response from a presumably bureaucracy! I am impressed.
