Before and After

Last Thursday we showed these pictures of a tree across from the shed that was struck by lightning.

As I was organizing pictures I found this one showing what it looked like last winter.

It did lose a lot, didn’t it? Andy and I went up to the land Saturday afternoon for a picnic supper so I had a chance to see how far the pieces were scattered.

Odd isn’t it that whether it is snow or lightning, the trees look so forlorn and bare!

  2. I agree with Rummuser that the trees look forlorn and bare, and wonder if any plans are in place to remove them. Or is it better to let nature take its course and allow new vegetation to grow around them? I suppose that’s what’s been happening for eons of years!

    • Jean says:

We had many of them removed from that area after the fire. Andy wants to keep some by the shed to act as lightning rods because he hasn’t installed lightning protection there. And, of course, we can’t afford to have all 80 acres of dead trees removed. As I’ve mentioned before, one tree on our land survived the fire.

Yes, sad and forlorn, but we decided not to desert it.

    still
they have kind of a stark beauty to me. it especially shows more in winter.
when you think of such ultimate POWER so close to us!
the lightning I mean. it’s no wonder ancient man worshipped the forces of nature!

    • Jean says:

I agree, it looks more beautiful in winter. Gloomy weather goes well with the dead trees. The new growth looks junky, but we’re happy to have it — all the organic matter was burned from the soil and the new growth will gradually put some back.

    • Jean says:

PS Presumably the ancients also worshipped fire. We would! Wildfires are impressive.

Wow blew the bark right off. And it’s still standing. Does make for some great photos though.
