I know it’s not a long time for any regrowth – but it does look absolutely amazing how of the undergrowth is making almost a low canopy for anything big that will evolve…
We won’t see any big evergreens in our lifetime, but aspens grow fast. Eventually they will thin themselves out as some grow tall. Unless another fire comes along, of course.
Does he plan to? Quite a task it would seem.
He planted the new one in a place not nearly so crowded. He hasn’t given up on the idea of planting in the old spot, but he has a lot of other things to do first. He wants to clear a 50-ft defensible space around the house and shed. The usual number is 25 feet, but it didn’t help at all for our intense fire.
oh I love the aspens. it’s one of the things I miss most about Colorado!

They knew right away — it was wind. It knocked down a tree that hit a power line.
PS I agree with you about aspens, and about it being cooler in the evenings. That’s what I like best about August — the chances are better for comfortable temperatures.
Those pictures give me hope! Nature, given good conditions, is great at regeneration!

Wow, 6 years. It’s still fresh in my memory.
The smoke was bad in both Missoula and Holland Lake this year (Mission Mountains? What do you mean? I don’t see any mountains.) but at least the actual fires are miles away.
So now I’m back in Seattle, where the air is plenty smoky from the B.C. fires. I gather we can expect more summers like this in the future.
I’m afraid you’re probably right.
PS I hope you had a good time at Holland Lake in spite of the smoke.
