Whistle a Happy Tune

There is something to be said for that. I’ve been whistling a lot lately, not necessarily a happy tune, just anything that comes to mind. One of them was Allouette, but unfortunately I just looked up the translation and may just drop it from my repertoire. No wonder they never taught us the meaning when I was a kid!

Anyway, whistling keeps me from catching my breath and/or breathing shallowly when I’m out of my comfort zone. And

Deep breathing relieves stress and anxiety due to its physiological effect on the nervous system. Breathing slowly and mindfully activates the hypothalamus, connected to the pituitary gland in the brain, to send out neurohormones that inhibit stress-producing hormones and trigger a relaxation response in the body.

I don’t have to focus on my breathing, I just break down what I need to do into little steps and focus on one thing at a time. I also take a lot of breaks to do Sudoku, not too hard but difficult enough to command all of my attention.

It works for me, what do you do?

I solve crossword puzzles, read magazines and books, respond to whatsapp, facebook and email messages, make telephone calls, blog and comment on blog posts, go to movies and lunches with friends and so on and so forth. I am never bored.

I cannot do deep breathing. No capacity. I cannot whistle either.

good grief! I also have always sung that song. my mother taught it to be years and years ago. I just thought it was naming bird parts!
    I have to be careful.
I have been known to hold my breath even when I am stressed!
    it’s not healthy.
although I would NEVER resort or turn to Sudoku to break the habit! LOLOL!
maybe for a math wiz. but not I.
just becoming aware and quieting the breath is what works for me.
I don’t count or do any of that. I just become ‘aware’ of it. and it does help.

Gad. I haven’t heard that tune from The King and I for years, and now I can’t get it out of my head. Thanks a lot!
We used to sing Allouette without a care. Innocent days!

  5. I recently heard the song from the 70’s, “Afternoon Delight” and I remember I loved that song — But now the words are a little “cringe-worthy” — I guess I’ve become my Mother, and honestly, I’m okay with that! 🙂
